Based on the clues provided in the diary, we found a deeply hidden underground chamber. Inside, there was nothing but a few altars made of stones, all covered in dust and cobwebs.
"This should be the place," I said as I turned around to confirm that this was indeed where the ritual would take place. However, we were still missing some items needed to initiate the ceremony.
Old Li asked, "Does the diary mention anything special?"
Suddenly, a chilling laugh echoed from behind us.
"I told you before, you can't do without me."
I quickly turned around and saw Molly slowly approaching. She wore a mocking smile, her eyes glinting with an unpredictable light.
Old Li asked her seriously, "How did you get here?"
Molly walked up to the altar and gently traced her fingers over the mysterious runes.
"I guess I might have already discovered the secret of the ritual," she said.
I frowned. "You know about the ritual too?"
Molly smiled slightly. "I know much more than you do."
"I know what you're looking for, and I can help you get the ritual started."
"But," she added, "I have a condition first."
Curiously, I asked, "What condition?"
Molly looked at me, a sly glint in her eyes.
"Well, you'll have to wait until after the ritual is successful to find out."
Old Li scoffed coldly, "Why should we trust you?"
Molly calmly smiled. "You have no other options left."
"If you don't have my help, you'll never be able to initiate that ritual."
I remained silent for a moment.
Molly was right; we really couldn't find another way. I glanced at Old Li, and he silently nodded. I took a deep breath and said to Molly, "Alright, we can work with you."
"But you have to promise not to pull any tricks right under our noses."
Molly laughed heartily, "Don't worry, I wouldn't be that foolish."
Following Molly's guidance, we began to get busy setting up the altar. Molly pulled out a shiny little object. It was a crystal, transparent like glass, emitting a blinding light. She carefully placed the crystal in the center of the altar. Then she took out several strange herbs and some dark powder.
She sprinkled these items around the crystal, then stepped back a few paces, closed her eyes, and began muttering some incomprehensible words.
Old Li quietly asked me, "Do you think she can be trusted?"
I shook my head, "I'm not too sure either."
"But this is our only hope."
We quietly watched Molly. Her expression was very serious, and the speed of her muttering increased, as did her volume. Suddenly, she opened her eyes and said to us, "There's one last thing: an ancient piece of parchment."
She handed us the parchment and instructed, "Place it on top of the crystal."
Old Li and I exchanged glances and slowly walked toward the altar. We placed the parchment on top of the crystal. At that moment, a strong beam of light erupted from within the crystal. Instinctively, I closed my eyes and heard Molly say in my ear, "The ritual is about to begin."
"Everyone get ready."
I opened my eyes and saw the runes around the crystal starting to spin rapidly.
They spun faster and faster, and the light grew brighter.
