Arriving in Shenzhen, feeling like a stranger in a foreign land. Standing on the bustling street, watching the crowd dressed in red and green flowing by, Liu Qianqian felt as if she were in a desolate desert, completely alone.
It had been over a month since she came here. Before her grandmother passed away, she gave Liu all the money from selling their house. After deducting the costs for her grandmother's burial and some other expenses, she still had 150,000 yuan left. However, during this month, she had been living frugally, surviving on instant noodles or bread each day, never allowing herself to indulge in a hot bowl of noodles. During the day, she searched everywhere for her father, only to drag her exhausted body into some corner at night to endure the long and cold nights. The hardships she faced growing up made her understand the importance of money and cherish the funds that her mother and grandmother had worked hard to protect. Moreover, everything here was incredibly expensive; she knew that if she didn't take care of her money, it would quickly disappear. So she saved almost all of it.
After much effort, she finally found the address mentioned in her father's letter but was met with scorn from a woman who told her that there was no such person. Lost and confused, she wandered around without knowing what to do. In this bustling city, the hurried urbanites showed little warmth towards this pale, frail girl dressed too simply. Where should she go?
A few days later, utterly exhausted, she returned to the house in the suburbs as darkness fell. Based on the photo her father had sent, she recognized the woman he mentioned he wanted to marry; it was the same woman she had seen that day. She must know where her father was; she had to find out. However, despite ringing the doorbell for a long time, the woman did not come out. The woman was not home. After days of searching, Liu Qianqian finally collapsed in front of that door.
Time passed without her noticing until bright headlights shone on her. A man and a woman stepped out of a Mercedes-Benz and walked over while chatting. The woman was surprised but quickly recognized her; Liu Qianqian bore a resemblance to her father. The woman remembered Liu's indifferent expression from her last visit.
"Who? What's wrong with this little girl?" The man's voice sounded slightly unusual.
Upon seeing Liu Qianqian for the first time, Fu Tianming felt an inexplicable pang of compassion and couldn't help but want to care for her. The woman stared at this man who was usually indifferent towards women with surprise.
"Open the door!" Feeling the woman's probing gaze and actions displeased him greatly. He ordered and picked up little Liu Qianqian as he walked toward the door.
"Long-term malnutrition combined with exhaustion; she'll be fine after some rest!" When Liu Qianqian woke up, a doctor was explaining this to Fu Tianming. Instinctively, Liu turned over but felt dizzy.
"Lie down!" For some reason, seeing her about to fall made Fu Tianming's heart ache. She looked at the tall man before her with fear in her eyes. However, when she saw the woman again, her expression quickly turned calm and indifferent. The woman brought over a steaming bowl of noodles and placed it on the table; Liu was very hungry and despite feeling sad inside, she ate as much as she could.
In fact, she had never hated this woman; seeing her just reminded Liu of her mother. It pained her!
"Please tell me my father's address." Taking advantage of Fu Tianming going to the bathroom, she asked. She could tell that there was something special between this woman and him. Having taken on responsibilities too early made her mature faster than others; she didn't want to disrupt their lives. "I really don't know; he tricked me out of some money and ran away! You can ask him!" The woman glanced at Fu Tianming who had just entered.
"The money was given by him! 100,000 yuan! That scoundrel!" The woman said bitterly. Liu Qianqian felt waves of sadness and embarrassment wash over her; her pale face turned crimson for that father whom she both loved and hated.
Silently, she found her shoes by the bed and awkwardly put on those dirty sneakers. She knew she no longer had any right to stay in this house, not even for a minute. For the first time in many years, this little girl feared looking into someone's eyes—the eyes of the person who saved her. For some reason, she didn't want him to look down on her.
"What are you doing?" His voice remained cold and stern but was still pleasant to hear. She lowered her head in silence; it wasn't indifference as before but rather unease.
"Let her stay here tonight!" He said to the woman without looking at her but instead focusing on Liu Qianqian. His gaze seemed commanding yet negotiating at once. Liu stared back intently; he seemed accustomed to giving orders and assumed they wouldn't object. After saying this, he stood up straight away while the woman immediately followed him into the bedroom without any dissent or hesitation.
