The Red Germany of Strasser 2: Beer Hall Putsch

Otto Strasser downstairs was anxiously smoking. As soon as he saw Strasser appear, he jumped up from the sofa and said, "Brother, something big has happened." 0

"What is it?" Although he already knew the outcome, Strasser still pretended to be puzzled and asked. 0

"This morning, Hitler took Rom to the Bergkeller beer hall, along with 400 stormtroopers. I heard that they are planning a coup." 0
Otto quickly explained the situation and then eagerly asked, "Brother, should we also join this riot? This is a great opportunity to expand our influence." 0

"No, we are not going, and we even need to distance ourselves from this operation," Strasser explained, looking at his brother's puzzled expression. "With Hitler and Rom's clumsy methods, any coup they attempt will inevitably have numerous flaws. They will only alert the authorities, and by the time they realize what they want to do, the government will already be prepared. The result can only be bloody conflict; relying on those stormtroopers to confront the army is a dead end." 0

There was one more thing Strasser did not mention: that Hitler would later sway the entire courtroom during his trial with his exceptional oratory skills, including the judge. In the end, he received only a nine-month prison sentence and caused a nationwide sensation, greatly enhancing his influence. 0

So it doesn't matter whether Strasser participates in the uprising or not; the Beer Hall Putsch will neither grant him more power nor will he be remembered by the public as a secondary figure. Instead, it could lead to a lot of trouble for him. 0

If he is not implicated and imprisoned, at least historically, during the time Hitler is in prison, Strasser not only elevated his status within the party but also began to cultivate a support base for himself, laying the groundwork for the ideological struggle that would emerge later. 0

"Then what should we do?" Otto asked. 0

"No, since Hitler has stirred the waters, we naturally have to go fishing," Strasser thought, already formulating a preliminary plan in his mind. This time, he intended to do more and better than the historical Strasser. 0

At around a quarter to nine on the evening of November 8, 1923, in the Bergkeller beer hall, Karl had been speaking for half an hour to approximately 3,000 citizens seated at rough wooden tables, drinking beer from stone mugs in the Bavarian style. 0

At that moment, stormtroopers surrounded the Bergkeller beer hall. Hitler pushed through the crowd and entered the hall. Just as his men set up a machine gun at the entrance, Hitler jumped onto a table and fired a shot into the ceiling with his pistol to attract attention. Karl immediately stopped speaking, and the audience turned around to see what was happening. 0

Hitler walked towards the platform under the escort of Hes and Ulrich Graf, a former butcher, amateur wrestler, and thug who is now the leader's bodyguard. A police Major tried to stop him, but Hitler pointed a pistol at him and continued forward. 0
At this point, Karl was so scared that "his face turned pale and he became flustered," and he stepped down from the platform, allowing Hitler to take his place. 0
"The national revolution has already begun!" Hitler shouted, "This place has been occupied by six hundred armed men. No one is allowed to leave the hall. Everyone must be quiet, otherwise I will set up a machine gun in the hall. The Bavarian government and the national government have been overthrown, and a temporary national government has been established. The National Defense Forces barracks and police barracks have been occupied. The army and police are advancing into the city under the swastika." 0

The last point is false, purely a bluff. But in the chaos, no one had any certainty. Hitler's pistol, however, was a real thing. It had already been fired. The stormtroopers and their rifles and machine guns were also real things. Hitler now orders Karl, Loso, and Seither to follow him to a private room behind the stage. Pushed by the stormtroopers, these three top officials of Bavaria obediently obeyed Hitler's orders, while the crowd watched in astonishment. 0

Hitler Once he had driven three people into the next room, he told them: "Without my permission, no one will leave this room alive." Then Hitler told them that all three of them could hold important positions in the Bavarian government or in his national government with the organization, alongside Ludendorff. 0

That evening, Hitler had sent Schleicher Richter to Ludwig Hoe to bring this famous general, who was completely unaware of the Nazi Party coup, to the beer hall. At first, the three men were unwilling to speak to Hitler, but he continued to deliver a speech to them. They all had to declare the implementation of the revolution and join the new government with him; they all had to accept the positions assigned to them by him - Hitler - and anyone who didn't comply "shouldn't expect to live." Karl was to become the regent of Bavaria; Loso was to become the Minister of National Defense Forces; and Sather was to become the chief of police for the country. However, none of these three men were moved by these high-ranking titles, and they completely ignored him. 0

They continued to remain silent, which made Hitler agitated. Finally, he waved his pistol at them and said, "There are four bullets in my pistol! If you refuse to cooperate with me, three are for you. The last one is for me!" He pointed the gun at his own forehead and shouted, "If I haven't succeeded by tomorrow afternoon, I don't want to live anymore!" 0

Karl may not be very smart, but he is very brave. 0
"Mr. Hitler," he replied, 0
"You can order them to shoot me, or you can do it yourself. It's no big deal whether I live or die." 0

Seyss-Inquart also spoke, condemning Hitler for not keeping his promise not to stage a coup against the police. 0
General von Lossow maintained a contemptuous silence. But when Karl began whispering in his ear, Hitler immediately said, "Shut up! No talking without my permission!" 0
But his own words had no effect. None of the three men who held power in Bavaria agreed to go with him, even with a gun pointed at their chests. 0

The coup did not go as planned, and Hitler was getting impatient. The longer it dragged on, the worse it would be for him. If the city government reacted and mobilized the troops, the revolution would surely fail, and both he and the Nazi Party would be finished. 0
