Zou Tiao had only been lying in the hospital for a few days, and Zhe Zhe had not come to visit him. He didn't believe she didn't know he was there. At first, he thought that if she came again, he would definitely give her a piece of his mind, but she never showed up after that.
During a check-up, the doctor said to him, "Don't be so reckless in the future. I've already told your girlfriend to take good care of you. Honestly, you really are wasting your body like this. Aren't you afraid your girlfriend will worry?"
Zou Tiao was taken aback. "What girlfriend?"
It was only after hearing the doctor that Zou Tiao realized Zhe Zhe had come by, but since then, she hadn't appeared again. Without her presence, Zou Tiao couldn't gauge her feelings. He felt wronged and sad; how could she not come see him when he was in such a state?
He texted her, but she never replied. He called her, and she responded perfunctorily.
When he asked why she didn't come, she said she was very busy.
That day, after all the visitors had left, Zou Tiao finally called her. It took three tries before she picked up.
"Are you that busy?"
Zhe Zhe had just returned from the restroom and didn't bother to explain herself. "What's up?"
Zou Tiao sat on the hospital bed, watching couples walk back and forth outside: "I'm sick. Aren't you going to come see me?"
Zhe Zhe was focused on her computer screen, where a spreadsheet was open; she didn't really pay attention to him. "You don't need me."
Zou Tiao felt extremely sad inside. "But I want you to come."
Zhe Zhe felt a pang in her heart and said, "Zou Tiao, let's just end this."
After work, she saw Zou Tiao standing at the entrance of the company, dressed lightly against the wind. As she walked past him, he followed her all the way to the parking lot. Just as she was about to get into her car, he grabbed her hand and said, "Don't break up with me, okay?"
"This isn't a breakup; it's an ending."
They weren't even boyfriend and girlfriend; they were merely lovers, so it didn't warrant such a formal term as 'breakup.'
He smiled faintly, still looking charming and carefree, but his voice was hoarse. "Why? Others have reasons when they break up. You just say it's over without giving me any explanation."
He had never acted like this in front of anyone else.
Zhe Zhe's eyes turned slightly red. After thinking for a moment, she gritted her teeth and pulled his hand away. "Zou Tiao, you can have anyone you want. Go back to your past life; we are not from the same world."
Go back to your dreamlike existence where you live for today and drink to your heart's content.
You're too much trouble; I don't want you anymore.
I can't afford you either.
The shadows of the trees slanted as Zou Tiao stood downstairs at Zhe Zhe's apartment, walking around in circles.
The light in her room was on, shining late into the night these past few days. But Zou Tiao knew that her work wasn't as busy anymore, and like him, she was also feeling down.
He scratched his head; he was just stuck in his old habits, and the bad traits left over from the past made it hard for him to be strict with the girl who was throwing herself at him.
During those days, Zou Tiao lived like a dog, and Zhao Jingze looked down on his scruffy appearance.
"Look at you, what have you become?"
Zou Tiao lethargically glanced at him and replied, "Whatever I am is fine."
Zhao Jingze couldn't say anything. How could a man fall in love with a woman and end up like this? Was this still the Zou Tiao he used to know?
Zou Tiao either drank himself into a stupor or kept calling Zhe Zhe. Sometimes Zhao Jingze wanted to stop him but found it impossible; he really didn't know what to say to save his brother.
Zou Tiao's state scared quite a few wealthy young men; none of them had ever seen someone act like this over a woman.
How did a bet and a joke turn into something so serious?
Zhao Jingze just couldn't understand.
