Huang Xiang's words clearly carried another meaning; it seemed that money was not the main issue, but rather her anger over past events, believing that Rao Jie had disregarded the family's arrangements.
At that moment, Rao Jian had just finished a game and, seeing the commotion, couldn't help but laugh.
Rao Jie gritted her teeth, breathing heavily with anger. "Mom, can you be reasonable? The only one in our family who has stolen money is my older brother. Not only did he steal from us, but he also stole from the neighbors. I have never done anything like that! Now that you've lost money, you don't suspect your son but instead suspect me? I said I didn't take it, and I mean it!"
"You!" Huang Xiang was infuriated by Rao Jie's attitude; she rarely spoke to her like this. Besides, how was she being unreasonable?
Rao Jian chimed in with a smirk, "Rao Jie, I came back after Mom did; don’t pin this on me."
Rao Jie wasn’t buying it. "You have a key; you can come back anytime."
Rao Jian shrugged and turned to Huang Xiang. "I can't help it; my sister insists on blaming me."
Huang Xiang immediately reached out and twisted Rao Jie's ear. "Rao Jie, what’s wrong with you? Look at how you’re acting—arguing with your parents and your brother. How do you expect to get married like this?"
The mention of marriage made Rao Jie tense up; she covered her ears and pulled away from Huang Xiang's grip. "That's none of your business! Mom, I didn’t take the money; I absolutely did not take it! If you have no evidence, I'm leaving!"
Huang Xiang paused for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh, as if she were the one being provoked by Rao Jie.
"You child... fine, I won’t hold you accountable for the five thousand. Just stay home quietly and don’t act crazy anymore. Sigh, it's all our fault; we should have brought you along back then instead of leaving you with your grandmother who raised you poorly. Now you don’t understand anything and don’t know how to share the burden with the family."
Rao Jie realized there was no point in arguing further and didn’t want to waste her breath anymore. She had held onto a glimmer of hope that maybe… she could go home, but now that last shred of hope was shattered.
"I didn’t steal the money, and I won’t admit to it. Since you don’t want to investigate further, I’m leaving!"
As Rao Jie turned to leave, Huang Xiang grabbed her arm firmly. "Where do you think you're going? I said you're not leaving; your dad will be home for dinner soon."
Huang Xiang's gaze was resolute, her brows furrowed. For a moment, Rao Jie felt a flicker of hope again; perhaps her mother was just being tough but actually wanted her to stay?
However, the next second, Rao Jian spoke up and dashed those thoughts away.
"Right, don’t leave! Go back to your room and tidy yourself up! Look at how you look now—like a ghost! How did you turn into this after just one day out? Manager Hu is bringing his son over later; don’t be stiff like last time, okay?"
Rao Jie's face went blank in disbelief as she looked at Huang Xiang. "Mom… did you trick me into coming back on purpose?"
Her voice was so hoarse that she could barely get the words out.
Huang Xiang felt a momentary pang of pity for Rao Jie but quickly regained her composure. Clearing her throat, she said sternly, "What trickery? As your mother, isn’t it my right to call you back? Your brother is right; look at your face—put on some makeup later!"
Rao Jie felt an overwhelming sense of suffocating despair. "Mom, I won’t get engaged to that person; I won’t marry him! You don’t need to think about it—I absolutely will not agree."
