"Say it again, how much?" Shen Jie stared at the forensic expert, his eyes wide open.
"Ten years at the very least! Even if you eat it, I can't change that! Moreover, this is just a preliminary estimate; we need to wait for the body to be brought back to the autopsy room for a detailed examination!"
"An examination is an examination! I'm just expressing my shock!" Shen Jie scratched his head irritably, glancing aside at his child who looked like a quail, wanting to shrink their head into their chest. He took off his brown leather jacket and tossed it to Wang Yi'an. "Don't complain about the smell, just wear it! Seriously, do you all not know to wear some clothes when going out at night? I only have these two pieces; even if I stripped them off, it wouldn't be enough for you all. Freeze then!" After saying that, he nodded towards the landlord. "What's your name?"
The landlord pointed at the rental agreement in Shen Jie's hand. "It's written there, Duan Shaoyi."
"Who can read this scribble?" Shen Jie muttered under his breath and asked again, "You said that Song Daoquan on the same floor rented this storage room from you. We have already detained him upstairs, but he adamantly denies the existence of this matter and claims he never signed any agreement with you. How do you explain that?"
Duan Shaoyi stammered in a panic, "I-I-I swear it's him, Police Comrade! Otherwise, how would I have a copy of his ID? Plus fingerprints and signature; you can compare them as you like..." At this point, he abruptly stopped speaking. Shen Jie raised an eyebrow and waited for him to continue his defense.
Ji Qinchou, standing in the crowd, took off his auxiliary police jacket and handed it to Ye Ying beside him. Ye Ying accepted it with a smile and put it on. In the center of the crowd, Duan Shaoyi slapped his forehead. "Ah! I remember now! I understand, Police Comrade! He had a backup plan! At that time, he had his daughter sign her name and put her fingerprint on it. This ID copy was printed when I went with his daughter to the printing shop at the community entrance! If you don't believe me, bring his daughter here to confront me!"
"His daughter?"
"Song Zheng! She graduated from college this year; I even ran into her in the elevator not long ago. She was all made up, wearing a skirt so short it barely covered her backside—she's completely different from when we signed the contract over a year ago!"
"Oh?"
"Back then she was so innocent; I'm not exaggerating—those pure girls in TV dramas can't compare to how endearing she looked. When she spoke, she would lower her head and her gaze would flicker; if you looked at her too long, her face would flush all the way down to her neck."
"Sounds like quite a shy girl. Did she say her dad asked her to rent the storage room on his behalf?"
"She didn't say that, nor did she need to. That fridge contains her mother; if it weren't for Song Daoquan sending her here, could she really keep her mother frozen inside without calling the police or arranging for a burial?"
"What did you say!" All the police present were shocked by this news. Shen Jie pointed sternly at the fridge. "Are you sure what's inside is Song Daoquan's wife and Song Zheng's biological mother?"
"Canyang Community has resettlement housing from Building 21 to Building 30; we used to be from the same village. What was Song Daoquan's wife's name again? Zhang... Yu... Zhen? Yes, that's it! How could I not recognize someone I see often? She went missing during the year of relocation in 2010; just after their family moved into their new house, she disappeared. We all know deep down that Song Daoquan must have killed her, but he wasn't afraid—he boldly reported her missing at the police station; what could we say?"
"At that time Song Zheng..."
"She was only eight or nine years old, crying and searching everywhere for her mom. Later on, after being scared by Song Daoquan, she never mentioned 'mom' again."
A girl in her twenties followed her father's orders to rent a storage room; she handed over the key and didn't dare ask any questions. Her father directed her to push the fridge into the storage room; she obediently complied, pushing in her mother whom she hadn't seen for thirteen years and plugging in the fridge without any extra actions. "Go up," her father commanded. She silently walked towards the elevator, completely unaware that she had just frozen her mother inside. Perhaps at that moment she looked up at her reflection in the elevator ceiling and momentarily dazedly called out—"Mom"?
Just imagining this scene is heartbreaking.
"If the basement storage rooms are allocated by household, doesn't Song Daoquan's family have one?"
"They do; it's right next door."
At this moment, Shi Ya's phone call came through. "Captain, we've found the owner of the emergency call number; however, she insists she never reported anything and knows nothing about any corpse. We've checked surveillance footage and compared multiple witness testimonies; we can basically confirm that the caller had no opportunity to report anything during that time."
Shen Jie rubbed his temples as he stepped aside. "Where are you now?"
“PINK Bar.”
Everything circles back to the starting point.
“Li Shuo, you go with me to PINK Bar. Qian'zi, you and Wu Dian'er take Yi'an and bring Song Daoquan back to the station for interrogation,” Shen Jie glanced at the silent Ji Qinchou and Ye Ying beside him, momentarily unsure how to arrange them. After a moment of contemplation, his short-circuited nerves reconnected. “Xiao Ji, Xiao Ye, you two will stay here to assist Forensic Expert Lin and ensure the scene is protected. Is that alright?”
“Sure!”
“Don’t go far in the near future. We will contact you promptly if anything comes up,” Shen Jie reminded Duan Shaoyi.
Duan Shaoyi was almost servile, “Got it! I won’t leave home and will be ready to cooperate with the police investigation at any time!”
The main team left, “The on-site investigation work is basically complete.” Forensic expert Lin Zhuo took off his gloves, supporting his lower back as he stood up. His entire face was flushed from exertion. “When the vehicle arrives, I need to quickly transport the body back to the technical department to avoid excessive interference from the external environment. What do you two think? Will you ride back with us or stay here to protect the scene?”
Ye Ying looked at Ji Qinchou for his opinion. Ji Qinchou turned his head, gazing into the depths of the dim underground corridor. His expression was increasingly inscrutable. Seeing his demeanor, Ye Ying smiled at Lin Zhuo, “We’ll stay here.”
Before long, the vehicle for transporting the body arrived. Ye Ying and Ji Qinchou helped Lin Zhuo place the body into the body bag in its original state; they also needed to transport the refrigerator back. The three of them hurriedly worked for about fifteen minutes before Lin Zhuo successfully left in a police car.
“When we were sending the body up just now, did you see anything while looking up?” After the police car disappeared outside the community gate, Ye Ying turned back to ask Ji Qinchou, who was staring intently at the external entrance of the basement not far away. “A surveillance camera,” he said, striding towards that dark place that excited him.
The frog's big mouth—this was Ye Ying’s initial impression of this entrance; it lay quietly there, thick with dust inside, with two clear rows of footprints leading in and out. While holding up his phone to capture evidence, Ji Qinchou circled around it along the wall and searched around its lips and teeth. “Found it!” He raised his arm, pointing at a corner on the ceiling, excitedly saying to her, “Sister Ying, retrieve the surveillance video from here!”
“Okay!” Without hesitation, Ye Ying took off running but suddenly stopped after a few steps. “What about you?”
“I want to check out Song Daoquan’s storage room.”
“It’s locked. I checked earlier; it has been installed for quite some time but has rarely been used—a new lock that can’t be pried open without leaving traces. It can only be opened with a key, but now that Song Daoquan is at the criminal police team, his house is probably locked up. Let’s wait until tomorrow; we’ll come back once we get the key. Don’t make any foolish mistakes; otherwise, if it goes to court later, all our efforts could be wasted because of a brand-new scratch!”
“Alright. I’ll guard the scene.”
