I reached out to block her. "President Gu, I have a girlfriend now, please show some respect."
Gu Ning became agitated. "I've looked into it; she’s not your girlfriend, just your assistant."
I looked at her coldly. "Just because she’s my assistant doesn’t mean I can’t date her. Who she is has nothing to do with whether I want to be with her. Gu Ning, I’m not you; I’m not that disgusting."
Gu Ning was left speechless.
I knew that Gu Ning had always looked down on me. The night we got together, she wasn’t drunk; she had seen a video on Qin Yang's social media featuring another woman, which sparked her idea to use me to provoke him.
"Mu Yan, everyone makes mistakes; can’t you give me another chance?"
I scoffed. "You treated me like a dog that you could summon and dismiss at will, using me to trample on my feelings. And now, after everything, you still have the face to ask for another chance?"
After saying that, I didn’t look at her again and drove away. Three days later, Gu Ning came looking for me again.
I had just finished a meeting when I saw her walking toward me with an anxious expression. "Mu Yan, for the sake of our past friendship, could you help the the Gu Family?"
I had also received news that the the Gu Group had been struggling since Father Gu passed away. Recently, their financial chain had issues, and if they couldn’t fill the gap, the company might go under.
She looked at me with a humble plea in her eyes. To be honest, after knowing her for so many years, I had never seen her like this before. But the part of me that loved her—Shen Mu Yan—had died three years ago in the sea; now I felt nothing looking at her.
"I'm sorry, but I can't help."
"What about my dad? He raised you; his kindness is also a debt!"
Gu Ning's face was much more haggard than a few days ago; she had lost a lot of weight and looked overwhelmed by the company's troubles. I tugged at my thin lips. "I've already died once; I've paid all my debts."
Gu Ning was instantly rendered speechless.
I looked at her calmly. "Gu Ning, everything between us ended three years ago."
She covered her face and sobbed, "Mu Yan, do you want me to kneel down before you can forgive me?"
She cried again.
In the past, she only cried for Qin Yang. Now, every time she sees me, she cries, but all I feel is disgust.
"If I hadn't been unlucky three years ago and had died in the sea without anyone saving me, there wouldn't even be a gravestone for me now." I paused before continuing, "Gu Ning, you don't love me; you're just unwilling to let go."
Gu Ning immediately denied it, saying, "That's not true. I really love you."
"When we were kids, you fought to get back a Barbie doll that was taken from you. How could you not fight for me, a man who has been by your side for eight years and has given you his all?"
Gu Ning shook her head. "I swear, I really—"
I interrupted her, "Then let me ask you this: What is my favorite dish?"
Gu Ning was stunned. She struggled to recall but couldn't remember what I liked to eat.
I wasn't surprised by her reaction. After all, she was the woman I had genuinely loved for eight years; how could she not understand me? It was just that she didn't know me. Gu Ning seemed to realize something and asked blankly, "Mu Yan, do you hate me?"
I shook my head. "No. Do you know why I don't hate you?"
I looked into her eyes and said clearly, "Because I no longer love you. Don't think that if you kneel before me or even if you die in front of me, it would move me."
Without love, there is naturally no hate. Gu Ning stood there motionless, lost in thought for a long time. Su Ying followed me back to the office.
She stood in front of the desk, her pretty face unusually serious. "Have you never doubted that kidnapping case?"
My fingers paused slightly on the mouse as I heard her continue, "Generally speaking, unless there's deep hatred involved, kidnappers usually only ask for money and not lives."
Su Ying had grown up in a wealthy family and had a sharper sense of this than I did. After thinking it over, I felt that Qin Yang indeed had issues; I wanted nothing more than to tear him apart immediately.
Su Ying urged me to stay calm; after all, it was just speculation. If Qin Yang was truly behind it, bringing him to justice would be the best way to handle it. After I reported it to the police, they began an investigation.
The group of kidnappers has been caught and confessed to the kidnapping case from three years ago. It turns out that the entire kidnapping was orchestrated by Qin Yang, who, in order to make money, pretended to be kidnapped alongside the kidnappers. He even devised a plan to have them throw me into the sea to prevent me from interfering with his financial schemes.
Qin Yang had been staying in the country, supported by several wealthy older women who were taking care of him. He was quickly apprehended. After Gu Ning learned the truth, she came looking for me, but this time she was unable to see me. I had given orders that she was not allowed to step into the company. Later, I heard from the security guard that she had knelt downstairs for an entire day.
