Back in high school, everything felt so familiar. The playground, the Teaching Building, the student dormitory, and those familiar faces. Yet, my mood was far from pleasant. I came from a small place and my family was a blended one. My biological father passed away early, and my mother remarried, but she neglected me. The teachers turned a blind eye, and my classmates treated me like an outcast, bullying me relentlessly.
But then I met Si Nian. She was someone who could save me.
"Hey, are you okay?" Si Nian squatted in front of me, looking nonchalant. I looked up at her; Si Nian had a teasing smile on her lips, her eyes glinting with mischief as if she were assessing me.
"I'm fine," I shook my head and struggled to stand up. Si Nian reached out and patted my shoulder. "Have you been having bad luck lately? Every time I see you, you're being bullied."
I paused for a moment, recalling what Si Nian had said before, and couldn't help but laugh. "Maybe."
"Maybe what?" Si Nian raised an eyebrow at me. "You’re not actually thinking of going to a temple to pray, are you?"
I fell silent. I didn't know how to respond to Si Nian's question. Her appearance wasn't coincidental; she always showed up when I needed help the most. This time was no exception.
Si Nian brought along a few tough girls; several students were bullying a boy, and I was their target. I got up from the ground and picked up my books, and Si Nian squatted down to help me gather them as well.
"Hey, don't you really need to go to the temple to pray?" Si Nian asked. "Every time I see you, you're being bullied. Isn't that just too unlucky?"
I turned to look at Si Nian, who was staring at me seriously, as if she was genuinely considering whether I should go to the temple.
"Si Nian..." I called her name.
"Mm?" Si Xiang tilted her head and looked at me. "What's up?"
"Thank you," I said.
Si Nian smiled, "No need to thank me; I just happened to pass by."
Her followers gathered around, chattering away.
"Boss, is this the handsome guy you mentioned?"
"He's so ugly!"
"Yeah, right? Calling him handsome is just ridiculous!"
I lowered my head and looked at my toes, unable to help but laugh at myself. Indeed, in everyone's eyes, I was just an eyesore.
"What do you know?" Si Nian scolded. "This is called personality. Do you understand personality?"
"But..."
"But what?" Si Nian shot them a fierce glare. "Are you itching for a fight?"
The little delinquents immediately fell silent.
Si Nian looked down at me, about to say something when she suddenly noticed my clothes and the dirt smudged on my face.
She froze for a moment.
"Um..." Si Nian scratched her head. "Actually... I think you're pretty good..."
Si Nian's tone was somewhat awkward; it was clear she wasn't very good at comforting people.
She raised her hand and used her sleeve to wipe the dirt off my book. "Can you still use these notes?"
I looked up at Si Nian and suddenly remembered something from my past life. Back then, Si Nian had taken care of me like this too.
"Si Nian..."
I took the book from her hands and said softly, "I can't find you."
I didn't know where Si Nian was.
In fact, I had never been able to find Si Nian.
All I remembered was that she was Si Xiang's sister, and she would die at the age of sixteen.
