My parents were taken away by the police, but Si Nian wore a proper smile on her face: "It was about time." Her voice was soft, only I, standing beside her, could hear it.
They were cursing, and my little brother rushed at me with a small shovel, shouting, "I'll kill you! I'll kill you!" I stood still, frozen in place. It wasn't until Si Nian stepped in front of me that I snapped back to reality.
I thought in a daze: She really isn't Si Nian. Si Nian would never smile so elegantly. Si Xiang was being thanked by the police at the station. I thought again, Si Xiang and Si Nian are indeed sisters; they both love meddling in other people's affairs.
By the time we left the police station, it was almost dark. Si Xiang had maintained her proper smile all day, but now she couldn't help but rub her sore cheeks.
"Gaoming, you..."
"I like your sister," I interrupted her.
Si Xiang was taken aback: "What?"
I said, "The one with red hair is your sister."
Si Xiang looked a bit angry: "How could you get it wrong too?"
I shook my head: "It's not a mistake; only she can take care of me and bring me along."
Si Nian—or rather, Si Xiang—was amused by my frustration: "Fine, then wait for Si Nian to come pick you up."
With that, she turned and walked into the rain. The rain fell heavily, carrying the chill of early spring. I sat down on a bench by the roadside.
Resting my chin on my hand, I began to think about what I could do for Si Nian. It seemed like I had always been causing trouble for her. Unlike her, who was always able to solve my problems so well when she was by my side, I felt frustrated and lost.
Looking at the increasingly heavy rain, I thought to myself how useless I truly was.
Then Si Nian arrived.
On the empty street, the rain fell steadily. Under the dim streetlight, Si Nian saw me sitting on the bench and didn’t bother to seek shelter from the rain. She broke the silence of the rainy night, a bit angrily: “Gao Ming, it’s pouring rain! Are you stupid? Don’t you know to find a place to hide?”
I lifted my gaze to her. Si Nian wasn’t holding an umbrella and was completely soaked. She walked closer and took my hand: “Come on, I’ll take you home.”
“Si Nian, this time, I really don’t have a home,” I said softly.
Si Nian paused for a moment before replying, “I know.”
I mustered up the courage to look at her: “Si Nian, can you take care of me just one more time?”
Si Nian fell silent.
I thought she was unwilling. Just as disappointment washed over me, Si Nian suddenly said, “Haven’t I always been taking care of you?”
I was speechless.
Si Nian grinned playfully: “What? Do I have to pin you against the wall and kiss you for you to remember?”
I couldn’t help but laugh. But as I blinked, I felt a sting in my eyes.
The rain was pouring heavily. Si Nian's white shirt was soaked, clinging to her body and revealing the graceful curves of a young girl. I glanced at her and quickly averted my gaze. But in the next moment, I couldn't help but sneak another look. Si Nian raised her eyes to glare at me, "What are you looking at?"
I mumbled softly, "Si Nian, you're so thin." I remembered that in my previous life, Si Nian had a well-proportioned figure. Si Nian shot me a glare, "It's all your fault."
"My fault?" I was confused. Si Nian raised her hand to touch the wound on my head, her anger boiling over, "Who else should I blame? You fought recklessly and got hurt, and now you didn't even treat it properly. Look at the scar you've got!"
I felt guilty. Seeing that I didn't respond, Si Nian's tone softened, "You were quite impressive during the fight; why do you look so down now?"
I lowered my head and said, "Si Nian, thank you!"
"I should be thanking you," Si Nian's voice was very soft.
"Thank me?" I was puzzled. Si Xiang didn’t explain anything. I pulled Si Nian into my embrace. Si Nian froze.
