The bell rang on time, and with the teacher's shout of "Class dismissed!", the students excitedly rushed out of the classroom. As they descended the stairs, the excitement led to some pushing and shoving, and that’s when the accident happened.
"Ah!"
"Be careful!"
"Don't push from behind, someone has fallen!"
"Is the student okay?"
"There's blood! There's blood!"
Shen Yulin, with his height advantage, spotted the girl who had fallen ahead. The crowd blocked her face, but his gaze was fixed on a corner of a gray canvas shoe peeking out. Shen Yulin's expression instantly turned cold as he stepped forward to part the crowd.
Zhang Yun knelt beside me, checking on me with concern. Just as he was about to direct a few classmates to help me to the infirmary, he saw Shen Yulin approaching with a stern face. The surrounding students automatically parted, whispering among themselves.
I sat on the ground and lifted my head, surprise flashing in my watery eyes as I said, "Shen Yulin."
Shen Yulin frowned and crouched down. At that moment, the cuff of his pants was rolled up, exposing his fair calf with a wound about 10 centimeters long, blood staining it vividly. He clenched his fist and asked in a low voice, "Does it hurt?"
I bit my lip; the surrounding classmates had not yet dispersed. The words "It hurts so much" were stuck in my throat as I looked at Shen Yulin, trying to suppress my emotions.
"A little."
A hint of impatience crossed Shen Yulin's eyes, and an inexplicable restlessness rose within him. Changing direction while still crouching, he turned his back to me and said, "Get on; I'll carry you to the infirmary."
Hearing this, Zhang Yun carefully helped me up. Seeing my embarrassed expression, he turned and confidently dismissed the onlookers: "Alright, alright, what’s there to see? You all hurry to the lecture! If you're late, the teacher will scold you."
The curious students had seen enough and quickly ran towards the auditorium, leaving us alone.
Supported by Zhang Yun, I stood still for a moment and hesitated before saying, "Shen Yulin, you and Zhang Yun can just help me to the infirmary."
Seemingly impatient with waiting, Shen Yulin replied harshly, "Stop talking nonsense and get on."
Zhang Yun nodded vigorously like a rattle drum: "Yes, yes! Xingxing, hurry up! I'll go find a teacher to excuse you two; I'll check on you later."
Before I could react, I found myself leaning against Shen Yulin's back. At that moment, everyone was in the auditorium; the campus was quiet. On the tree-lined path, it was just Shen Yulin and me.
Shen Yulin walked slowly. Along the way, I felt my soft arms wrapped around his neck; a gentle breeze occasionally brought a pleasant fragrance that made my skin feel hot.
"Shen Yulin," I called softly.
"What's wrong? Does your foot hurt? Then I'll walk faster; we'll be there soon." Saying this, Shen Yulin quickened his pace.
"Am I too heavy? You can actually support me; I can hop there..." This was the first time I had been carried by someone other than my father.
"Tsk~ Xingxing, don't you know how much you weigh? Where did all those skewers and spicy strips you ate with Zhang Yun after school go? Is your digestive system that good? You're as light as a feather; a gust of wind could blow you away," Shen Yulin said with a smile.
I didn't respond and huffed.
When we arrived at the infirmary, he placed me on the bed and raised his hand to gently tap my forehead: "Come on, I can carry both of us!"
