After that incident, Cheng Haifeng never sought out Zhang Yun again. Even when they encountered each other in the hallway, they simply brushed past one another as if they were strangers. Cheng Haifeng remained the same, always wearing a playful smile; Zhang Yun was still the same, ignored by everyone, with no one wanting to be her friend. They existed like parallel lines, no longer intersecting.
That day after school, Zhang Yun walked home alone as usual. While walking along the path beside the school, she was surrounded by Chen Xiaoxi and a few delinquents, and she was terrified by their actions.
"That's the girl," Chen Xiaoxi said, pointing at Zhang Yun as she spoke to the delinquents.
Zhang Yun looked around, trying to seek help from nearby classmates or teachers, but under the threat of the delinquents, everyone chose to act as if nothing was happening.
"What do you want?"
Zhang Yun pressed herself against the wall of the path in fear, sweat slowly dripping down her forehead and slightly dampening her school uniform jacket. The delinquents surrounded her, their disgusting gazes scanning her from top to bottom.
"This girl is pretty, huh, big brother?" one of the delinquents said with a lewd grin.
"What good is being pretty? In class, she just flirts with her classmates," Chen Xiaoxi said angrily, her expression twisted with jealousy.
Zhang Yun felt extremely uneasy and helpless. She tried several times to break free from their encirclement, but her efforts seemed futile; the delinquents stubbornly kept her trapped in the middle, not allowing her to leave.
"What do you really want?"
With a crisp sound, a clear handprint appeared on Zhang Yun's face as Chen Xiaoxi slapped her. "What do we want? Of course we want to teach you a lesson!" Chen Xiaoxi said as she continued to slap Zhang Yun multiple times.
Zhang Yun gritted her teeth and dared not retort; humiliation and pain overwhelmed her. She felt it hard to breathe and clenched her fists tightly, staring at Chen Xiaoxi without uttering a word.
"You've got some spirit," Chen Xiaoxi sneered as she turned back to direct the delinquents. "Just have fun with her; just don't go too far." With that, Chen Xiaoxi turned and left with the leader of the delinquents.
"Alright then~ Thanks, Sister Xi," the delinquents received their instructions and moved closer to Zhang Yun with lewd smiles.
Tears finally streamed down Zhang Yun's face uncontrollably. She hugged her backpack tightly against her chest in an effort to protect herself. Just as one delinquent's hand was about to touch Zhang Yun's arm, Cheng Haifeng shouted, "Stop!" and rushed forward without hesitation.
No one in class knew that Cheng Haifeng practiced Sanda (Chinese kickboxing). After a few rounds of confrontation, the delinquents were scared off and fled in all directions. Cheng Haifeng turned to look at Zhang Yun and noticed that her eyes were unfocused. He held her shoulders gently and shook them lightly. "Zhang Yun?"
Zhang Yun's eyes were filled with tears; she couldn't see clearly who was in front of her and thought it was one of the delinquents. She began to struggle continuously, shouting, "Don't touch me! Let go of me!"
Cheng Haifeng hugged Zhang Yun tightly: "Zhang Yun! Look closely! It's me!"
Tears sparkled in Zhang Yun's eyes; through her blurred vision, she seemed to hear Cheng Haifeng's voice. The familiar scent of laundry soap filled her nostrils; its fresh aroma dispelled her unease, and she gradually calmed down.
"Zhang Yun, it's me, Cheng Haifeng."
"Haifeng..." Zhang Yun called out with a hint of sobbing in her voice. "I'm so scared..."
Cheng Haifeng held Zhang Yun tightly as she let her tears soak his clothes while he quietly waited for her emotions to settle.
After crying for a while, Zhang Yun finally calmed down. She pushed Cheng Haifeng away gently; he released her, and she looked at him gratefully. She felt an inexplicable sense of comfort and warmth as if she had finally found a bit of support and reliance.
"Thank you."
"Are you okay? Does your face hurt?" Cheng Haifeng gently placed his hand on Zhang Yun's face.
"Yeah, I'm fine now." Zhang Yun noticed the dampness on Cheng Haifeng's left shoulder and felt her cheeks flush. "I'm sorry for getting your shirt wet."
Cheng Haifeng then looked at his shoulder and patted it.
"It's okay, let's go! I'll take you home."
