I struggled to sit up and looked around. There was a simple bed, a small round table, and a wardrobe. The entire room had no other furnishings and was clean and tidy.
Could it be... I was captured by human traffickers to give birth?
Thinking of this made me curl up in fear, the terror and helplessness forcing me to listen intently to the sounds outside, afraid that someone would push open the door at any moment to come in and make me have a baby.
At 9 PM, my father returned home. The house was dark, and he saw the untouched dinner on the dining table. He walked towards my room and found that I was not there. He checked the kitchen, bathroom, and balcony but saw no sign of me. Panic set in. He quickly grabbed his Nokia phone and called Uncle: "Is there any extra class today? Xiao Fan still hasn't come back."
Uncle also panicked upon hearing this and called my aunt who was on her way home.
"Are you with Xiao Fan today?"
"No, I told you I was working overtime today. What's wrong?"
"Your brother-in-law called, saying Xiao Fan hasn't come home tonight!" Upon hearing this, my aunt slammed on the brakes, almost causing the car behind her to crash. She cursed as she took a detour.
"Hurry, ask your brother if Xiao Fan is with him."
Uncle hung up and then dialed my aunt's home number.
"Hello? Who is this?" came the voice of Shen Yulin's mother from the other end.
Uncle's heart sank. He knew his sister-in-law was already aware of the situation with the two kids. If he mentioned looking for Yulin regarding Xiao Fan now, she would definitely refuse to let Yulin answer the phone. After thinking for a moment, he said, "Auntie, is Yulin at home?"
"He's upstairs. What do you need him for?"
"The school plans to hold a drone competition next week, and I wanted to see if he's interested since I'm in charge of overseeing it. If he wins, there will be extra points for the final exam."
Shen Yulin's mother was thrilled to hear this and shouted upstairs, "Yulin, your brother is on the phone."
Hearing it was his older brother calling while playing computer games in his room, Shen Yulin came downstairs.
He took the call and saw his mother smiling broadly, so he curiously put the receiver to his ear: "Brother."
"Listen to me; don't say anything. I just lied to Mom saying that the school is holding a drone competition that I'm overseeing, and if you win, there will be rewards for the final exam. Remember what I said; don't let anything slip. I need to tell you that Xiao Fan hasn't come home tonight. Did you hang out with her after school?"
Upon hearing this last sentence, Shen Yulin clenched his fists. Afraid his mother would notice something amiss, he pretended to be happy and replied, "I didn't."
"I just asked a friend from the police system to help look into it. If you're worried, come over to Xiao Fan's house now. Also, do you know who Xiao Fan is close with? Call them and ask."
Shen Yulin felt cold all over; he didn't even remember how he hung up the phone. He forced a smile at his mother and said he needed to go to his brother's house to discuss the drone competition. Before she could say anything else, he rushed out of the house with his keys.
In less than half an hour, everyone gathered at my house. My father stood on the balcony smoking one cigarette after another while Uncle kept asking his friend on the phone about any updates on finding me. My aunt lay on my bed crying uncontrollably, while Shen Yulin had also asked Zhang Yun and Cheng Haifeng but received no answers from them either. He bit down hard on his lower lip as he trembled uncontrollably.
