Shen Yulin led me into a small room in his office and said softly, "You can rest here during lunch." I shyly glanced around the small room, which had a neat single bed and a small desk. "I think I'll just lie down at my workstation," I replied quietly.
Shen Yulin gently hugged me and said, "Xingxing, please don't refuse me." My back stiffened, and I could only nod as I walked over to sit on the edge of the bed, feeling a bit nervous. Shen Yulin seemed to sense my unease; he softly closed the door and reassured me, "Don't worry, I won't disturb you. Just relax."
Listening to his words, I gradually felt more at ease. I lay down on the bed, closed my eyes, and enjoyed the tranquility of the afternoon. Before long, I drifted off to sleep.
When I returned to my workstation in the afternoon, I found a delicate little gift on my desk with a note beside it that read: "Xingxing, remember to have a cup of coffee to wake yourself up after you wake up."
At that moment, Lu Yi approached with a document and smiled as he asked, "How was your nap?" I glanced at him and replied, "It was great." "Do you know Director Shen?"
"We were classmates in middle school."
"That makes sense," Lu Yi said with realization. "Please handle this document; once you're done, take a break. It's your first day at work; don't overdo it."
"Thank you." With that, I focused on my work.
Before leaving work, several female colleagues from the information processing department gathered around my workstation, chattering about company gossip. They informed me that there would be a departmental dinner after work to welcome new employees. I happily accepted their invitation. The dinner was set at a popular restaurant where everyone chatted and ate together in a friendly atmosphere. However, I noticed Lu Yi occasionally glancing at me as if he wanted to say something.
At 11 PM, after the dinner ended, I waited for a ride by the roadside when a gray Hyundai pulled up in front of me. The window rolled down, revealing Lu Yi with a cheerful smile: "It's hard to get a taxi around here; let me give you a ride home?" I looked around; there weren't many cars on the road at this hour. After hesitating for a moment, I got into the car. "Thank you, Manager Lu."
"You're too polite; just call me Lu Yi. Where do you live?" I told him the name of my neighborhood as the car started moving. Throughout the ride, I stared out the window in silence while feeling relieved that Lu Yi was focused on driving and didn't engage in much conversation.
When we arrived at my neighborhood's entrance, I said goodbye to Lu Yi and got out of the car. Just as I was about to leave, Lu Yi called out to me. "Fanxing, wait a moment." He got out of the car and approached me. "Actually, I've been wanting to ask you if you have a boyfriend?"
I looked at him in surprise. "Why do you ask that?"
He smiled lightly. "It's nothing; I'm just curious. If you don't have one, can I pursue you?"
I was taken aback and didn't know how to respond. At that moment, Shen Yulin's figure suddenly flashed through my mind. Taking a deep breath, I apologetically said to Lu Yi, "I'm sorry, but..."
"It's fine; don't take it to heart. We can be friends first?" After hesitating for a moment, I smiled and replied, "Of course; we are friends now." Upon hearing this, Lu Yi broke into a delighted smile.
"Then... can I add you on WeChat?" He took out his phone and opened the scanning feature.
I pulled out my phone and we added each other on WeChat. "See you at work tomorrow then, Fanxing," Lu Yi said as he got back into his car.
I watched his car drive away with an indescribable feeling in my heart. Back home, I lay on my bed scrolling through Lu Yi's WeChat Moments. He seemed like someone who loved life; his posts were filled with travel photos and food shares. Yet Shen Yulin's image lingered in my mind.
Just then, I received a message from Shen Yulin: "Are you home yet?" My heart raced as I replied: "Just got home."
"Did you have a good day?" Shen Yulin asked again.
"Yes, it was quite nice; my colleagues are all very friendly." The chat box showed "The other party is typing..." Then Shen Yulin sent: "That's good; get some rest early. Good night."
Lu Yi also messaged me: "I'm home now; you looked beautiful today." After thinking for a moment, I replied: "Thank you for giving me a ride home tonight." Soon after, Lu Yi responded: "You're welcome; good night." Not replying further, I turned off my phone.
