"I am his friend, Yue Fanxing." I awkwardly wished I could find a crack in the ground to hide in.
"Fanxing?" A hint of surprise flashed across the girl's face, but she quickly regained her smile. "Hello, I'm Shen Yuyao, Yulin's sister."
"Hello," I replied politely with a smile.
"Oh, so you're the sister! You two chat; I think I'll head back first." I turned to leave.
"Hey, Fanxing, don't go! Let's hang out!" Shen Yuyao grabbed my arm. "I just saw a newly opened dessert shop; let's go try it together!" Shen Yulin glanced at me, seemingly seeking my opinion. After thinking for a moment, I nodded. So the three of us walked into the dessert shop together. Shen Yuyao ordered a piece of cake and a cup of coffee, while I opted for an ice cream.
"Fanxing, how did you meet Yulin?" Shen Yuyao asked curiously.
"We were classmates in middle school."
"Wow, so young!" Shen Yuyao exclaimed. "My little brother is usually very aloof; I didn't expect him to be so gentle with you." I felt a bit shy and lowered my head just as Shen Yulin's phone rang.
"I'll take this call," he said as he stepped out of the dessert shop.
Shen Yuyao watched his back thoughtfully and said, "Fanxing, are you really just friends? If you really like him, don't give up; he's a prince charming in the eyes of many girls!"
I smiled but didn't respond. I knew Shen Yulin was excellent and surely had no shortage of admirers. However, I wanted to think more about agreeing to be with him; this was something I hadn't discussed with Shen Yulin.
When Shen Yulin returned after finishing his call, he looked troubled. "What's wrong?" Shen Yuyao asked.
"Nothing, just some company matters."
"If you're busy, you can go ahead; I'll chat with Yuyao for a bit longer," Shen Yulin said after some thought, tossing his car keys to Shen Yuyao. "You can take her home later; I'll come by tomorrow to pick up the car." He stood up and left first.
Shen Yuyao and I exchanged glances and couldn't help but laugh.
After chatting for a while longer, Shen Yuyao drove me home. I invited her up for tea, but she declined.
My aunt only stayed at home for two days before flying back to City Z. According to her, she had to work on Monday; she just came to see me. I adapted quickly to my new job and worked diligently from morning until evening, trying to complete as much as possible during work hours. My hardworking attitude earned me constant praise from the manager of the information department.
One day, Lu Yi walked over to my desk: "Fanxing, Director Gu is looking for you." I quickly stopped what I was doing and walked into Director Gu's office. "Director Gu, you called for me?"
"Xiao Yue, your expression has been quite good lately!"
"I'm just a newbie; I've only just started and don't know much yet; please bear with me."
"Xiao Yue, we have a business trip to City Z the day after tomorrow; it will last five days in total—get ready."
"Excuse me for asking, who will be going on this trip?"
"There will be four of us; I'm in charge of leading the team: Yang Xue, you, and Lu Yi. Lu Yi will explain the specifics later."
"Okay, I'll get back to work then." Director Gu waved his hand dismissively for me to leave.
The thought of going to City Z the day after tomorrow and being able to visit my father and aunt made me feel incredibly lucky! I happily returned to my desk and began packing my things. Yang Xue noticed my excitement and scoffed: "Hmph, you've only just arrived and already get to go on a business trip with us seniors? Didn't realize your skills were that impressive."
I could hear her arrogance and jealousy but chose not to respond and focused on organizing my things instead. Yang Xue continued relentlessly: "What? Not daring to reply? You think just because you've been here a few days that Lu Yi helping new employees means he likes you? Hmph! You should look in the mirror and see what you look like." She glanced toward Lu Yi as she spoke. Frustrated, I retorted, "What nonsense are you talking about?" Just then, Lu Yi walked over and saw that Yang Xue and I were both flushed from arguing; he quickly intervened and handed me some documents. "This is the itinerary and important notes for this business trip; take a look first. If you have any questions, you can ask Yang Xue or me; she's an experienced employee who knows how these trips work." I took the documents without saying much more and nodded in acknowledgment.
