Shen Yulin did not look back; the door opened and then closed again. The three people inside watched his departing figure in silence. As he walked downstairs, he looked up at my room window, filled with unease, as if in the next moment, I would disappear from his world.
He took out his phone and dialed. "Hello," I answered. "Xingxing, where are you? I have something to tell you," Shen Yulin said, taking a deep breath.
"In the park across the street, the usual spot." I hung up the phone. A few minutes later, Shen Yulin stood silently behind me. I didn't turn around but could smell the familiar scent of vanilla that suddenly filled the air; I knew he had arrived. "Just say what you need to say," I urged. Shen Yulin looked at me, his eyes filled with guilt and affection. "Xingxing, I'm sorry. It was my fault." I fell into silence.
"Shen Yulin, after you left that year, I felt like the whole world lost its color." I finally spoke up. "I know we still live under the same sky and breathe the same air, but I just can't see you anymore, maybe never again. Over time, I gradually got used to being without you. When I was with Zhang Yun and Cheng Haifeng, I even fantasized about how happy I would be if we were together. But I know that fantasies can never become reality."
"Xingxing, please give me another chance," Shen Yulin said eagerly. I turned around to look at him; tears welled up in my eyes. "Do you know how long I've waited for those words? Ten years—it's taken me ten years to finally hear this from you. I really want to give you a chance this time, but you doubt me. There’s nothing between me and Lu Yi. Didn't Zhang Yun and Cheng Haifeng tell you that all these years I've only had you in my heart? You shouldn't doubt me."
Shen Yulin pulled me tightly into his arms. "I'm sorry. I'm really scared—scared that you don't like me as much as before, scared that someone else treats you better than I do, scared that you'll reject me."
I leaned against his chest, feeling his warmth. "Shen Yulin, don't pressure me; give me some time." He nodded. "I promise I won't rush you; I'll wait for however long it takes. But one thing—please don't reject me no matter what, okay?"
I didn't push him away; my hands hung weakly by my sides as my weary heart greedily enjoyed his warmth. Years ago, I fought desperately to stay by his side; now, after ten years, it was him who was fighting to stay by mine. This world truly isn't fair—two people who love each other are forced to waste so much time apart.
The next two days of vacation passed relatively peacefully until it was time to return to B City. Director Gu and the others took an early flight back while I delayed my departure until the evening to leave with Shen Yulin.
The airport was bustling and noisy at night, filled with voices. Shen Yulin quietly stood behind me with our luggage as I reluctantly held hands with my aunt, as if there were many unsaid words between us. My father and Uncle also looked at me with reluctant expressions. "Xingxing, it's almost time." "Go on now, dear. I'll come visit you during the National Day holiday." I nodded and said goodbye before turning to follow Shen Yulin toward the security line.
Sitting in the VIP waiting area, my eyes were still red; I'd been crying more often lately, leaving them puffy. Shen Yulin gently wrapped his arm around me. "Don't be sad; if you want to come back, just tell me—I’ll accompany you to see them." "But I have work," I pouted helplessly.
"How about I transfer you here to be my secretary? You can work when you want and take vacations whenever—you won't hear a peep from anyone." "I don’t want that; I really like my current job." Shen Yulin smiled softly. "Alright then, I'll do whatever you say."
Soon it was our turn to board the plane. The night flight was particularly quiet; the dim lights made me drowsy as I leaned against Shen Yulin's shoulder and fell asleep. In a daze, I felt someone kiss my forehead and gently pat my face while a soft voice whispered in my ear: "Little lazy cat, wake up; we’ve arrived in B City." Rubbing my eyes awake, I realized I was in Shen Yulin's embrace and felt my face flush hotly. Quickly sitting up straight, I fixed my hair.
