Just as we were about to board, Fang Yuan suddenly appeared.
"Ye Chen," she said breathlessly as she ran over, "I'm sorry, my parents... they agreed not to pursue it anymore. You don't have to leave."
Both Ye Chen and I were stunned.
Fang Yuan forced a smile: "I explained everything to them. They... they understand now."
Understand what? What did they come to realize?
I looked at Ye Chen, unsure of what choice he would make.
After a moment of silence, Ye Chen said, "We still need to go."
Fang Yuan looked at him in shock: "Why?"
Ye Chen took my hand: "Because there are too many unpleasant memories here. And we need a fresh start."
I looked at him, tears welling up in my eyes.
Watching Fang Yuan walk away, I suddenly felt that everything from the past was like a dream.
The plane took off, and I leaned on Ye Chen's shoulder, gazing out at the clouds.
"Ye Chen," I said softly, "what do you think our future will be like?"
He kissed my forehead: "I don't know. But as long as you're with me, it's the best future."
I smiled, my heart filled with hope.
Perhaps, this is our new beginning.
A new city, a new hospital, a fresh start.
Our lives seemed to have pressed the restart button.
Ye Chen quickly found his footing in the new hospital. His skills and experience were recognized by his colleagues.
I also restarted my writing career.
With the little golden swallower, I found myself filled with more inspiration.
Our small home was once again filled with laughter and joy.
However, happy days are always fleeting.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
Ye Chen took a deep breath: "It's Fang Yuan. She... she is seriously ill and needs surgery."
I was stunned: "And then?"
Ye Chen said, "She wants me to perform the surgery on her."
I felt a sharp pain in my heart.
So, are we going to repeat the past again?
Can we not escape from what has happened before?
"Do you want to go, right?" I asked softly.
Ye Chen looked at me, noncommittal.
I remained silent for a moment before saying, "Go ahead. It's your duty."
Ye Chen hugged me tightly: "Thank you. I promise, it's just for the surgery, nothing else."
I nodded, watching his hurried figure leave.
Yet, a sense of unease rose within me.
Ye Chen, will you come back this time?
After Ye Chen left, my life seemed to lose its color.
Every day, I mechanically took care of the child, wrote articles, and waited for news from Ye Chen.
On the other end of the phone, Ye Chen's voice was always tired but firm: "The surgery went smoothly, but the follow-up treatment will take time."
I suppressed my anxiety: "Okay, you need to rest."
I hung up the phone and looked at the sleeping child, tears streaming down my face uncontrollably.
Ye Chen, do you still remember our home?
A week passed, then two weeks.
Ye Chen still hadn't returned.
I started to suffer from insomnia and began to overthink.
Fang Yuan was sick, and Ye Chen went to take care of her. Was this fate's arrangement?
Maybe... they were truly a match made in heaven?
Just when I was about to break down, the doorbell rang.
I opened the door, only to see a stranger, a middle-aged man.
"Are you Ms. Gu Nian?" he asked politely.
I nodded, a sense of unease rising in my heart.
"I am the lawyer for the Fang family." He handed me a document. "This is the divorce agreement. Mr. Ye said you would understand."
I felt the world spinning around me and had to lean against the doorframe to steady myself.
"This... this is impossible," I stammered.
"Ye Chen wouldn't do this."
The lawyer remained expressionless: "Mr. Ye has already signed. Now it just needs your signature."
I looked at the document, feeling as if my world was collapsing.
No, I couldn't believe it.
Trembling, I picked up the phone and dialed Ye Chen's number.
"I'm sorry, the number you dialed is turned off..."
The cold mechanical voice seemed to announce the end of our marriage.
I collapsed onto the floor, tears streaming down my face.
Ye Chen, are you really going to abandon us?
At that moment, the sound of a child crying reached my ears.
I wiped my tears and stood up.
I cannot fall apart. For the sake of the child, I must be strong.
"I'm sorry," I said to the lawyer, "I need time to think."
Closing the door, I picked up the crying child and softly comforted, "It's okay, sweetheart. Mommy is here."
Watching the child gradually calm down, I made up my mind.
Alright, Ye Chen, if this is your choice, then I will no longer cling to it.
I picked up a pen and trembled as I signed the divorce agreement.
At that moment, I felt a part of me die along with it.
