I stood there, holding my phone in a daze, the words I had just heard echoing in my mind. The old case from ten years ago was being brought up again, and it involved me. Why did the intermediary mention my name? What was going on?
As I sank into thought, the other party seemed to sense something was off and urgently called out, "Miss Yue? Miss Yue, are you listening? Miss Yue?" I snapped back to reality and quickly replied, "I'm listening. Please tell me the specific time and place." After hanging up, my emotions were still in turmoil. Could there have been other hidden truths from that year?
I got up to ask Director Gu for leave and took the elevator up to the 28th floor. Shen Yulin's office was empty; the secretary said he was in a meeting. After waiting for half an hour and feeling a bit impatient, I left him a message and headed out to catch a ride to the airport.
Upon returning to City Z in the early evening, I noticed several missed calls from Shen Yulin when I got off the plane. I called him back.
"Xingxing, where are you?" Shen Yulin's anxious voice came through the phone.
"I just arrived in City Z. I'm heading to the police station now."
"Xingxing, wait for me. I'm boarding a flight; I'll go with you."
"Take your time; it's fine." After hanging up, I took a cab to the address provided by the police. As soon as they heard I was a victim of the kidnapping and human trafficking case from ten years ago, they had me sit in the reception room. Two female officers sat across from me; one placed a recording pen on the table while the other held a notebook to take notes. The first officer asked, "Are you Miss Fanxing?"
"Yes."
"Do you remember the shocking kidnapping and human trafficking case that occurred in City Z ten years ago?"
"I remember; I was one of the women who were almost sold by several men."
"Do you know Zhang Da?" I looked at the officer in confusion. "Who is Zhang Da?"
"Zhang Da is the intermediary for this case; sellers used him to traffic people to buyers."
"I don't know this person."
"Do you know Director Ke?"
"Director Ke?"
"There were a total of eight women involved in this case, and you were one of them. However, unlike the other seven who were randomly chosen by the criminal group on the road, your photo was provided by Director Ke to Zhang Da with instructions to kidnap and sell you."
At this point, I felt a jolt run through me as if struck by lightning. My lips instinctively bit down hard as if trying to break skin. My once rosy complexion turned pale as death; everything around me began to blur, shrouded in fog. I desperately tried to stay awake, but my head felt like it had been struck with a heavy blow, causing unbearable pain.
My left hand trembled uncontrollably as my index finger dug into the webbing of my right hand with such force that my nails sank deep into my flesh without me even noticing the pain. It was only by doing this that I could barely keep myself from collapsing. "Director Ke..." This name echoed in my mind, bringing waves of dizziness.
It was none other than Shen Yulin's mother! How could this be possible? Countless questions flooded my mind, making it nearly impossible to think.
Finally, I could no longer hold on; my body went limp and fell down. "Miss Yue! Miss Yue..." The voices of the two female officers faded away until everything turned blank.
