Struggling to get up from the sofa, he instinctively grabbed his phone. However, when he saw the new incoming message, he instantly became fully alert. His eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at the screen, as if the words were both strange and familiar. The message from his older brother read clearly: "Come home when you wake up, Xiao Fan is not quite right. Post-traumatic short-term amnesia." Those few words hit Shen Yulin like a bombshell, exploding in his mind. His hands trembled slightly, filled with worry and fear.
Ignoring his disheveled appearance, Shen Yulin hurriedly grabbed his car keys and jacket, stumbling toward the door. Behind him, Aunt Zhao called out anxiously, urging him to eat something before leaving, but at that moment, he could not hear her.
"Post-traumatic short-term amnesia..." The term wrapped around Shen Yulin's thoughts like a nightmare, and his heart felt as if it were being torn apart. "Xingxing, wait for me." Shen Yulin whispered to himself as he pressed down hard on the accelerator, the car speeding away like an arrow released from a bow.
Suddenly, there was a screech of tires outside, followed by a rapid and forceful knocking on the door that echoed loudly. The nanny heard the noise and rushed to open the door in a panic. As soon as the door opened, she was about to greet the person standing there, but before she could say anything, Shen Yulin tightly grasped her hand and urgently exclaimed, "Where is she?" His tone was so desperate that it startled the nanny. Trembling at Shen Yulin's unusual demeanor, she quickly pointed toward the stairs and replied, "The first room on the left on the second floor."
With the answer in mind, Shen Yulin dashed upstairs without hesitation. His footsteps echoed on the stairs as if each step was pressing down on his anxious heart. Upon reaching the second floor, he found the first door on the left as indicated by the nanny and pushed it open without hesitation.
Upon entering the room, Shen Yulin immediately saw a family doctor standing by the bed talking to Uncle. At that moment, I sat quietly on the bed with a dazed and hollow expression, as if I had lost my soul.
"Xingxing..." he softly called out, gazing at me with deep and passionate eyes.
I looked up; who was this person? Why was he looking at me like that?
I observed him closely; his clothes hung loosely on him, his collar askew with several buttons missing, revealing a wrinkled shirt underneath. His pants were also crumpled rather than neatly pressed. His hair was messy and unkempt, covering his eyes; he looked exhausted from running upstairs and seemed slightly out of breath. It felt like he had been drinking; I instinctively sniffed as a faint scent of alcohol lingered in the room since he entered.
Both Uncle and Dr. Zhang paused their conversation upon seeing him enter. Uncle shot him an annoyed glance and said, "How could you go out looking like that? Aren't you afraid of scaring Xiao Fan?" Only then did Shen Yulin look down at his attire and awkwardly tug at his collar. "I woke up and saw your message; I didn't pay attention and just rushed out."
I curiously looked at this man; his gaze towards me was profound yet gentle, making me want to look at him longer. Unable to hold back any longer, I asked Uncle, "Who is he?" This question struck like thunder in the previously calm air, leaving both people present stunned. A hint of surprise appeared on Uncle's face while Shen Yulin furrowed his brows in unexpectedness.
Meanwhile, Dr. Zhang keenly sensed the subtle shift in atmosphere between them and couldn't help but think to herself: "It seems this young lady has completely forgotten her beloved! What a pity..." She shook her head gently while displaying a hint of helplessness in her eyes.
"Xiao Fan, you... don't recognize him?" Uncle asked me tremulously while pointing at Shen Yulin. "I don't recognize him... Is there something wrong?" I looked at Uncle in confusion. Shen Yulin quietly approached me, extended his right hand with an effortful smile and said earnestly, "Hello, I am Shen Yulin."
Hearing his name made my breath catch for a moment; my brows furrowed as something unusual surged within my mind. I covered my head with both hands while silently repeating: Shen Yulin.
Seeing my pained expression, Shen Yulin quickly stepped forward to embrace me. "Xingxing." Suddenly I caught a faint scent of herbs; I lowered my hands from my head and stared blankly at the man holding me. "Who exactly are you..." I murmured softly.
