My father patted my shoulder gently and said, "Child, I know this isn't easy for you. But you must trust your heart. No matter what decision you make, I will always be by your side, supporting and encouraging you."
"Dad, I don't want to go back to B City for now. I will submit my resignation. I want to stay in City Z."
"Alright, I'll talk to your aunt. We'll head home tomorrow."
While my father and I were talking in the room, the people in the living room were not idle. Shen Yulin sat on the sofa, smoking one cigarette after another, while my aunt sat quietly without speaking. Uncle broke the silence, asking, "Is everything handled at the company?" Shen Yulin nodded in response.
"You promised that once Xiao Fan regained her memory, you would leave. It's time to fulfill that promise!" Uncle's words were like a cold wind on a chilly night, blowing through with a chilling ruthlessness. His indifferent gaze seemed to tell Shen Yulin that nothing could change this situation.
However, Shen Yulin was not crushed by this coldness. He straightened his back and responded without hesitation, "What was said that day doesn't count!" His tone was firm and powerful, as if declaring his determination to Uncle.
"It was agreed that I would help restore Xiao Fan's memory, and after that, I would leave. But now, her memory has returned on its own due to stimulation; it has nothing to do with me. I'm not leaving!" Shen Yulin's gaze was piercing as he fixed his eyes on Uncle, seemingly trying to see into his innermost thoughts.
"Nothing to do with you?" My aunt suddenly stood up, raising her voice slightly. Her face was filled with surprise and anger, clearly dissatisfied with Shen Yulin's response. She never expected him to so resolutely go against their original agreement.
"If it weren't for you, would she have turned out like this? A girl who was once as vibrant and innocent as a flower has become like this, and you still dare say it has nothing to do with you? I've known you for many years since marrying your brother; how have you become so detestable and repulsive now? Is it that you're too good at disguising and hiding your true self, or were we all too foolish and blind to be deceived by your false exterior?" My aunt spoke in a furious tone filled with anger and disappointment.
Uncle was about to add something when he saw my father walk out of the room. "Go in; she wants to talk to you alone." A glimmer of surprise flashed in Shen Yulin's eyes as he quickly got up and walked into the room.
"Xingxing!" As soon as he entered, he looked at me with joy. At that moment, I was quietly standing by the window, my expression calm as water, gazing at him without any sign of emotion. He seemed to sense something unusual about me; his steps hesitated slightly as confusion and unease flickered in his eyes. He stood there, locking eyes with me, trying to find some answers in my gaze. However, my eyes remained unchanged—deep like a well—making it hard for him to discern my true feelings.
"Xingxing, what do you want to talk about?"
"Brother Yulin..." My voice was as soft as a breeze, as if it would scatter with just a little force. "I admit that even knowing your mother harmed me back then, I never thought of leaving you. However, your actions later filled me with fear. When I was with you before, I felt incredibly happy and thought I was the luckiest person in the world. Yet after going through so much turmoil, my love for you hasn't changed; it has only added a hint of fear. I never expected you to be so insecure that you would treat me in such an extreme way as imprisonment. Perhaps... we really are not meant to be together."
