Yan Jien opened the door and found his landlord Amy standing at the entrance with two young individuals. They were police officers, one male and one female. The male officer had a fair complexion and a neatly styled side part, looking at Yan Jien with a scrutinizing gaze. The female officer was tall, dressed in a black denim T-shirt, with a neat ponytail and sharp eyes that exuded confidence.
"Are you Mr. Yan?" the female officer asked.
"I am. Who are you?" Yan Jien replied, puzzled.
"These two are police officers. Our Clark has been missing, so we came to gather some information," Amy explained.
"Oh, I see. Please come in," Yan Jien said hurriedly.
"No need, we're just here to ask a few questions," the female officer waved her hand.
"Sure, go ahead," Yan Jien responded politely.
"Let me introduce myself. My name is Li Yanqiu, and I am a detective from the Xiufeng Criminal Investigation Team." Li Yanqiu pulled out her badge and showed it.
"Hello," Yan Jien nodded politely.
"Mr. Yan, when was the last time you saw Clark?" Li Yanqiu asked.
"Um..." Yan Jien thought for a moment, "In the evening on the 11th."
"What was the exact time?" Li Yanqiu pressed further.
"I can't remember," Yan Jien shook his head.
"Approximately?" Li Yanqiu frowned.
"About 6 o'clock," Yan Jien recalled.
"How can you be so sure?" Li Yanqiu stared into Yan Jien's eyes.
"I was working overtime that day and got off at 6. I went out to buy some food after work and saw Clark downstairs when I returned with my takeout. But Amy said she wanted to put Clark on a diet, so I didn't share my food with him and went straight upstairs," Yan Jien explained.
"Where did you see Clark?" Li Yanqiu continued questioning.
"Downstairs," Yan Jien answered.
"Be more specific," Li Yanqiu insisted.
"At the stairway," Yan Jien thought for a moment.
"When you went upstairs, did Clark follow you?" Li Yanqiu asked.
"I don't remember," Yan Jien shook his head.
"Really?" Li Yanqiu fixed her gaze on him. "But the tenant on the second floor said they saw you and Clark going upstairs together."
Yan Jien's heart skipped a beat.
"Is that so? I might not have noticed," he pretended to remain calm.
"When you went upstairs, did Clark stay close behind you?" Li Yanqiu pressed on.
"It should be." Yan Jien nodded.
"After you went upstairs, did Clark follow you into your room?" Li Yanqiu continued to ask.
"I don't remember. I just went back, took a shower, and went to sleep." Yan Jien shook his head.
"Did you hear any noises while you were showering?" Li Yanqiu asked next.
"No." Yan Jien shook his head firmly.
"What about when you were sleeping?" Li Yanqiu asked again.
"Not at all." Yan Jien shook his head once more.
"Are you sure?" Li Yanqiu squinted his eyes.
"I'm sure." Yan Jien nodded.
"Alright, I understand." Li Yanqiu nodded. "We'll stop here for today. If you remember anything, feel free to contact me."
Saying this, Li Yanqiu took out a business card and handed it to Yan Jien.
"Okay." Yan Jien accepted the card with both hands.
"Then we'll take our leave now." Li Yanqiu said.
"Take care." Yan Jien replied politely.
Li Yanqiu, the Male Police Officer, and Amy went downstairs together.
Yan Jien closed the door and opened his ears, listening to the conversation downstairs.
"Captain Li, can you find our Clark?" Amy asked worriedly.
"We will do our best." Li Yanqiu replied.
"Team Leader Li, this case has no leads at all. How are we supposed to investigate?" the Male Police Officer asked.
"Mm." Li Yanqiu responded.
"Hey, Captain Li, don’t be so serious. Smile a little." The Male Police Officer joked.
"Get lost!" Li Yanqiu shot a glare at the Male Police Officer.
"Hehe." The Male Police Officer chuckled awkwardly.
"By the way, Captain Li, your mom called me again. She said she’s looking for a match for you." Amy said with a smile.
"My mom is really something. She keeps trying to set me up. I've told her I'm not considering marriage right now." Li Yanqiu said helplessly.
"You should think about it; you're already 30 years old." Amy advised.
"I'm still young." Li Yanqiu pouted.
"What do you mean young? Once a woman turns 30, she ages quickly." Amy said.
"I know, but I really don't have the mindset for marriage right now." Li Yanqiu said helplessly.
"Is it that you don't have the mindset or that someone is already on your mind?" Amy asked curiously.
"Don't guess randomly." Li Yanqiu's face turned slightly red.
"Haha, I think you have someone in your heart," Amy laughed.
"No, I don't," Li Yanqiu denied.
"Don't hide it from me; who are we to each other?" Amy said with a smile, "Tell Auntie, who has stolen my Yan Qiu's heart?"
"Really, there isn't anyone," Li Yanqiu's face turned even redder.
"Hmph, if you don't tell me, I'll find out sooner or later," Amy huffed.
"Just don't worry about it," Li Yanqiu said somewhat helplessly.
"How can I not worry? You are my future daughter-in-law," Amy said with a smile.
"Auntie, please stop joking," Li Yanqiu's face was flushed.
"I'm not joking," Amy said seriously, "You two are such a good match, a golden boy and a jade girl, made for each other."
"Auntie, please stop," Li Yanqiu wished she could dig a hole and hide in it.
"Alright, alright, I won't say anything more," Amy said with a laugh.
" Team leader Li, look at this case; there are so many doubts; it might be hard to solve," the Male Police Officer said.
"Mm," Li Yanqiu responded.
"This case is indeed a bit complicated," the Male Police Officer continued, "First, how did the murderer enter the community? If they were an outsider, how did the security guard not notice? If they were an insider, then who are they?"
"Secondly, what is the murderer's motive? Why kill the pets?"
"And what grievance does the murderer have with these pets? Why torture them?"
"If these questions aren't resolved, this case might be impossible to crack."
"Mm," Li Yanqiu nodded, "However, I feel that this case is somewhat different from the previous pet disappearance cases."
"Different?" The Male Police Officer was taken aback.
"Mm," Li Yanqiu nodded again, "In the previous pet disappearance cases, it was mostly when the owner left home and the pet was alone before going missing. But this time, Clark's owner was right beside him when he disappeared."
"Are you saying that this wasn't done by the same person?" The Male Police Officer asked in surprise.
"Mm," Li Yanqiu nodded.
