I let my mother pull me as we walked toward my room.
However, just as we reached the door, my mother suddenly stopped.
It was as if she remembered something and abruptly turned around, running toward the Mourning Hall.
I was startled and quickly followed her back.
She ran in front of the Mourning Hall and crashed right into it.
I followed closely behind.
But the room was empty; there was no sign of Pingping anywhere.
My mother turned around a few times inside the room and suddenly looked under the Spirit Table.
Oh no!
Just as I was about to stop her, she dove right in.
"Pingping, I've caught you!"
My mother exclaimed with a sharp laugh.
I pulled Pingping out from the small cabinet under the Spirit Table.
Pingping looked terrified.
“Chunsheng, help me, save our child!”
I grabbed a wooden stick and rushed over, swinging it at my mother.
But my mother was as solid as iron; the stick hit her without any effect.
She reached out with both bloodied hands and grabbed Pingping by the neck.
Pingping was turning pale, her eyes rolling back.
Her belly made a pounding sound.
“Chunsheng, the baby is coming!”
Large beads of sweat kept falling from Pingping's pale face.
She struggled continuously but couldn't break free from my mother's grip.
I panicked and lunged at my mother, pulling at her with all my strength.
But my mother did not move at all.
"Mom, Mom, wake up, wake up!"
I slapped her face, crying and shouting.
My mother turned her head to look at me; her lips were crimson, and she opened her mouth to reveal two sharp white fangs.
"Chunsheng, she is not your Sister-in-law; she is a ghost prostitute. She wants to kill all the men in our village. She has already killed your father and your elder brother; we can't let her harm you anymore!"
I shook my head desperately. "Mom, she is not a ghost prostitute; she is Pingping, your daughter-in-law, my wife, the mother of my child."
"Mom, please let go; she is about to give birth. You are going to have a grandson!"
"Grandson?"
My mother paused for a moment.
Her mouth slowly moved away from fifth Master Ma's neck.
She stared blankly at me and suddenly smiled. "Chunsheng, are you telling the truth?"
"Yes, it's true. Mom, please let go."
My mother let go of her hand.
Pingping clutched her neck, gasping for breath.
She leaned against the Spirit Table, slowly sliding down to sit on the ground.
"Chunsheng, I... I'm going to give birth."
She cried out in pain, her stomach covered in blood.
I rushed over and hugged her. "Pingping, are you okay?"
She lifted her tear-filled eyes. "Chunsheng, you finally acknowledge me."
"I... I..."
I stammered, unsure of what to say.
"Chunsheng, I'm sorry. I lied to you."
"What?"
"I... I actually didn't do anything with you."
"Then your stomach..."
"My stomach carries your child, but that night, you did nothing."
"Then why did you... with my brother?"
"It was Mother. She put us in the same bed and made me... with your brother."
"Mother!"
I raised my head and looked at Mother.
She stood in front of me, looking at me with a blank expression.
"Mother, tell me, why is this happening?"
"For no reason, Chunsheng. Mother is doing this for your own good."
"For my own good?"
I stared blankly at Mother.
"Mother, you... you are not my mother. Who exactly are you?"
My mother smiled ominously and said, "Chunsheng, I am your mother."
As she laughed, she suddenly opened her mouth wide, revealing her white, sharp fangs, and lunged at me—
I instinctively dodged.
My mother missed.
She turned around, glared at me, and lunged at me again—
At that moment, Pingping suddenly shouted, "Chunsheng, watch out!"
I was so startled that I dodged to the side but bumped into the table.
Everything went dark in front of me, and I collapsed to the ground.
In my hazy consciousness, I saw a light and shadow.
She floated gracefully down beside me.
It was Egret Bay.
She whispered in my ear, "Chunsheng, wake up, wake up."
"Chunsheng, do you still remember me?"
"Chunsheng, it's me, Pingping."
"Chunsheng, I don't have much time left. You must remember me."
"Chunsheng, I've been waiting here for you all along."
"Chunsheng, I... I like you."
"Chunsheng, goodbye..."
I shouted and sat up.
The sunlight was blinding.
I found myself lying on a pile of hay in a grass hut.
I looked around.
The hut was empty.
I got down from the haystack.
I found the thatched hut covered in a thick layer of dust.
It seemed like no one had been here for a long time.
I stepped out of the hut.
Outside, the grass was lush and green.
Egret Bay danced gracefully.
A pure and delicate girl was sitting by the shore, with her back to me.
She seemed to be crying.
I walked over and gently tapped her shoulder.
She turned her head.
Her face was streaked with tears.
"Pingping!"
