"There's no need to be nervous, Mr. Lin. I'm just a messenger," the man chuckled lightly, his tone carrying an elusive undertone. "A gentleman wishes to speak with you about your background."
I clenched my fingers tightly, knuckles turning white, a flicker of shock crossing my eyes, but I quickly regained my composure, my voice as cold as ice. "What are you talking about? My background?"
"Why pretend to be unaware, Mr. Lin?" the man said leisurely, his tone laced with certainty. "You are not an orphan; you are the last bloodline of the Ye family, a hidden aristocracy."
"Absurd!" I interrupted him coldly, though a storm surged within me. This news struck like a bolt from the blue, shattering my tranquil life.
"I know this is hard to believe, but facts speak louder than words," the man paused before continuing. "The old master of the Ye family is gravely ill and wishes to see you before he passes. He hopes you will come with me."
I took a deep breath, struggling to suppress the turmoil inside me, and asked coldly, "What if I refuse to go?"
"Mr. Lin, you have no choice," the man replied calmly but with an undeniable authority. "The Ye family has ways to change your mind."
I fell silent for a moment, my mind racing with thoughts. Finally, I spoke slowly, my tone firm and resolute. "I refuse. My life is mine to control; no one can force me."
"Mr. Lin, are you sure you want to pass up this opportunity?" The man sighed lightly, regret evident in his voice. "The Ye family is a true behemoth; their wealth and power are beyond your imagination. Are you really willing to give up the chance to reconnect with family and gain everything for the sake of a past that is already over?"
"My past has nothing to do with you," I interrupted coldly. "I'll say it again: I refuse."
With that, I hung up without hesitation, tossing the communicator onto the desk with a sharp clatter. I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and gazed down at the brilliantly lit city below, my expression gradually growing resolute.
My life is in my own hands.
---
The communicator buzzed with a busy signal as the mysterious man's voice abruptly cut off. With my back turned to the dark window, the city's dazzling lights outlined my stern profile. The Ye family? Family ties? Ha! How ridiculous. I had grown accustomed to being alone, wrapping myself in indifference and strength; I didn't need anyone's pity or charity, let alone a suddenly emerging family trying to dictate my life.
I turned back to my desk and opened the interstellar network, typing in "Ye family." An overwhelming amount of information flooded in instantly. Just as the mysterious man had said, the Ye family was indeed a true giant; their business empire spanned the entire galaxy, controlling countless core resources and technologies across various star systems. As I browsed through news articles and introductions about the Ye family members, waves of emotion surged within me. Could it be that I truly had intricate ties with this mysterious family?
I forced myself to calm down and deleted all search history before dialing a private investigator's number: "Help me look into someone—Ye family. I want to know everything about them."
Meanwhile, in the top-floor president's office of Gu Corporation's headquarters, Gu Ming was overwhelmed as he listened to reports from various department heads.
"President Gu, the Interstellar Bank has rejected our loan application!"
"Mr. Gu, several of our key routes have been seized by interstellar customs!"
"Mr. Gu, the suppliers have also stopped delivering our raw materials!"
...
Bad news came one after another, weighing heavily on Gu Ming, making it hard for him to breathe. He weakly waved his hand to signal everyone to be quiet, rubbing his temples in exhaustion. He knew all of this was because he had offended the wrong person, but it was too late to say anything now.
"Mr. Gu, what should we do now?" the marketing director asked cautiously, his tone filled with worry and unease.
Gu Ming was silent for a moment, a glimmer of determination flashing in his eyes. He took a deep breath and said in a deep voice, "Prepare the spaceship; I need to see Lin Xi."
The assistant looked up in surprise, seemingly unable to believe his ears. "Mr. Gu, you want to see President Lin? But..."
Gu Ming abruptly stood up, interrupting the assistant's words with a firm and resolute tone: "There are no 'buts.' Only she can save the Gu family now!"
The assistant dared not say anything further and silently bowed his head as he exited the office. Gu Ming walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the bustling night scene outside, filled with bitterness and helplessness. Once, he had been so proud and confident, believing that he could rise to the top again through hard work and talent. But reality had dealt him a harsh blow, making him realize that in this world of the survival of the fittest, without strength, everything was futile.
His only hope now rested on the woman he had once deeply hurt.
---
Gu Ming trudged heavily toward the landing pad, each step deliberate. The overhead lights stretched his shadow long but could not conceal the loneliness and fatigue in his eyes.
"Mr. Gu, the spaceship is ready," the assistant said as he jogged to catch up with him.
Gu Ming said nothing; he simply nodded and stepped into the spaceship. The hatch slowly closed, shutting out all external noise and severing his last thread of hesitation.
The spaceship's engine emitted a low rumble as it gradually departed from the landing pad, transforming into a streak of light that vanished into the vast night sky. Through the porthole, Gu Ming took one last look at the city where he had once fought so hard, filled with reluctance and nostalgia. He knew that this departure might very well be a final farewell.
...
"President Lin has been gone for three days now; according to Starport records, her destination is..." The assistant flipped through an electronic document in his hands, uncertainty creeping into his voice.
"What place?" Gu Ming asked urgently, his brow furrowed.
"The edge of the Sirius system... Black Rock Star," the assistant replied cautiously as he looked up.
Gu Ming suddenly stood up, his expression darkening significantly. Black Rock Star—a desolate and remote mining planet with extremely harsh conditions—was a place few would willingly go. Why would Lin Xi go to such a location?
"Prepare the ship! Depart for the Sirius system immediately!" Gu Ming issued the command decisively without any hesitation.
The assistant was taken aback and quickly advised, "Mr. Gu, the Sirius system is very far from here, and there are often interstellar pirates near Black Rock Star. It's too dangerous to go recklessly!"
"I can't worry about that now!" Gu Ming's eyes flashed with determination as he said firmly, "No matter what, I must find her!"
...
"What did you say? Gu Ming...?" The teacup in my hand slipped and shattered on the floor with a crisp sound, but it couldn't drown out the turmoil within me.
"Yes, Miss Lin, Mr. Gu has come after you without regard for anything else, but..." The assistant on the communicator hesitated.
"But what? Hurry up and tell me!" I stood up abruptly, anxiously pressing for answers.
"Mr. Gu's spaceship was attacked by interstellar pirates while passing through the Sirius system, and now..." The assistant's voice grew quieter, as if afraid to speak the cruel truth.
"What happened now? Please tell me!" My heart felt as if it were gripped tightly by an invisible hand, making it hard to breathe.
"Now... his fate is uncertain." The assistant's voice was barely audible, yet it struck me like a thunderclap in my ears.
Everything went dark before my eyes, and I nearly collapsed to the ground.
