On the day of the wedding, Xie Zhong had a falling out with Xia Ranran. The reason was that Xia Ranran suddenly demanded an additional two hundred thousand in bride price. Xie Zhong refused. The two argued fiercely in a video.
Xie Zhong looked sincere, saying, "Ranran, I really don't have any money left; I've given you all my money. Please don't make it difficult for me, okay?"
"This is my wedding, not someone else's. Can't you stop being so domineering?" Xia Ranran replied coldly.
"If you don't have money, then go find someone rich. I don't care if you get married or not."
"In any case, there will be no marriage without the two hundred thousand bride price. You can figure it out yourself."
"I don't care if you steal or rob; I just want the two hundred thousand for my wedding."
"Fine, then we won't get married."
Xie Zhong stood up, his tone calm. "Xia Ranran, I won't look for anyone else. If you want to get married, go ahead; if not, then forget it."
After saying this, he left with a group of groomsmen. Then he came to my house downstairs. He arranged candles in the shape of a heart and stood there proposing to me.
I later saw that video while scrolling through my WeChat Moments. I don’t know who filmed it, but the conversation between Xie Zhong and Xia Ranran in the video made me feel uneasy. He looked wronged and helpless.
He said he didn't want to marry her; his family was forcing him into it, and he had no choice but to get married. He insisted he had no money left and had given all of it to Xia Ranran. Yet, Xia Ranran still wasn't satisfied.
He looked pitiful, but his words made me feel sad. Clearly, he had already broken up with Xia Ranran and had married me, so why was he still thinking about her? Why wasn’t he marrying me? Was it because he didn’t love me?
I didn’t want to question him because I understood Xie Zhong. No matter how much I asked about what he didn’t want to say, he wouldn’t tell me.
I watched that video many times.
Every time I watch it, my heart aches once more. But I can only pretend to be indifferent and live my life with Xie Zhong as usual. Because I have already married him. Moreover, he treats me well. Life after marriage is stable. We travel regularly and enjoy various cuisines. It's not bad at all. Over time, I have stopped being so troubled by the reasons behind Xie Zhong's proposal. As long as he treats me well now, that's enough.
Later on, I heard that Xia Ranran also got married. She married a male classmate who liked her. Although he isn't very wealthy, he can meet her needs. The name Xia Ranran gradually faded from our lives, becoming someone insignificant. Until this time, when Xie Zhong, in a drunken state, called out Xia Ranran's name. All the grievances and sadness that I had deliberately ignored surged back.
I held back my tears as I helped Xie Zhong into the bathroom, took off his clothes, and turned on the shower. He leaned against my shoulder and murmured, "Don't leave me." My nose felt sour. I didn't know if he was talking about Xia Ranran or me. I took a deep breath and tried to steady my voice, "Xie Zhong, you've had too much to drink; you should take a shower first."
He didn't respond, just quietly leaned against me. After helping him finish his shower, I was exhausted. I assisted him onto the bed, tucked him in, and softly said, "Xie Zhong, you should rest well." As I prepared to leave, he grabbed my hand. He opened his eyes, his gaze clear, "Aren't you going to sleep?"
I shook my head, "I still have work to finish; you go ahead and sleep."
"I can't sleep; stay with me for a while."
I hesitated for a moment, but ultimately decided to stay. I lay beside him as he stared at the ceiling, both of us lost in our own thoughts. After a long while, I softly spoke, “Xie Zhong, you… said a lot just now.” He tilted his head slightly and asked, “What did I say?”
“You said, don’t leave me. Who were you talking about?” He paused for a moment before smiling and replied, “I was talking about you.”
“Really?” I looked at him, feeling a bit anxious. I wanted to hear his true feelings. However, he fell silent again and didn’t continue. I felt a bit disappointed. But soon, I adjusted my emotions. I told myself not to be greedy. I had already won his heart; it didn’t matter if there were others in his mind.
I softly said, “Xie Zhong, I will always be with you.” He looked at me with a complex expression and asked, “Really?”
“Mm.” I nodded firmly. That night, I talked a lot with Xie Zhong. We discussed the past, the present, and the future. Yet, we both tacitly avoided mentioning Xia Ranran. I thought perhaps he had truly let go of her. After all, he was now married to me. Our life was so happy; what reason could he have not to cherish me?
