I lay beside her, observing her closely.
Her chest showed no rise and fall.
I leaned in to listen to her nose.
She was not breathing.
I panicked.
I called Chen Ruichun: "You need to come quickly, Granny Liu seems to be dead!"
Chen Ruichun didn't come.
He said, "What does it have to do with me?"
I said, "Chen Ruichun, I'm begging you, please come help me."
He said, "If you give me money, I'll help you."
I said, "Okay, I'll give you money, just come."
It took me two hours to clean the house.
It took me half an hour to drag Granny Liu into the bathtub.
Her body was very soft.
Her skin was very loose.
The mess on her body got all over me.
I applied body wash on her.
I scrubbed her body.
I rinsed her off.
I spent all my retirement savings.
I had no money left.
When I grow old, no one will take care of me.
I will starve to death.
I will die of thirst.
I will end up like Granny Liu, covered in filth, abandoned in my old age.
I was utterly desperate.
I was so desperate that I wanted to die.
Chen Ruichun finally arrived.
He helped me put Granny Liu back on the bed and change her clothes.
Granny Liu seemed to still be alive.
Her chest was slightly rising and falling, as if she was still breathing.
Just as I was about to speak to Chen Ruichun, the landline rang.
It was Granny Liu's second son.
He was about to come over.
In a panic, I shoved Chen Ruichun into the wardrobe.
I tidied up my clothes and hair, took a deep breath, gathered my courage, and waited for Granny Liu's son.
The second son arrived.
He frowned as he looked at the water stains on the floor: "What happened?"
I said, "I just mopped the floor for Granny Liu."
The second son walked to Granny Liu's bedside and lifted her blanket.
The blanket was clean, with no signs of feces or urine.
Granny Liu looked clean and had no injuries.
The second son examined her carefully but found nothing unusual.
He asked me, "How has my mom been lately?"
I replied, "She has been a bit constipated recently, so her diet has been light."
The second son asked, "What has my mom been eating?"
I said, "I've tried to give her light meals."
He inquired, "How has she been eating lately?"
I responded, "She's been eating okay."
The second son nodded and then shook his head: "She's too thin."
I smiled slightly: "That's how old ladies are."
The second son looked at me with sharp eyes: "Is that so?"
I nodded vigorously.
The second son snorted and lifted Granny Liu's blanket. He poked her arm with his hand and asked, "Why is it so hard?"
I replied, "It's been hot lately, and she's been sweating a lot, so she's a bit dehydrated."
The second son poked Granny Liu's face again and asked, "Why is your face so swollen?"
I said, "It's been hot lately, and she's been drinking a lot of water, so she has some water retention."
The second son stared at me, his gaze sharp like a knife, piercing my skin painfully. I tried hard to maintain a smile.
Suddenly, the second son bent down and brought his face close to Granny Liu's. "Mom, do you know who I am?"
Granny Liu looked at him, tears streaming from the corners of her eyes.
He wiped her tears with his hand and rubbed her eyes gently. "Mom, don't cry. I'm here to see you."
Granny Liu cried even harder. She opened her mouth and began to call out.
After listening for a while, the second son didn't understand anything. He turned to me and asked, "What did my mom say?"
I made up an answer: "Granny Liu is saying that her son has come."
The second son smiled. He took a photo of Granny Liu and posted it on social media with the caption: "A deep bond between mother and son."
After finishing up, he checked his watch. "I have to go; I still need to catch a flight."
He grabbed his briefcase and hurriedly left.
I returned to Granny Liu's room. I prepared to wash her face. She slapped me. I lost my balance and fell down.
