He rarely didn't get angry, just staring at me intently.
After a long while, I heard him say something quite absurd.
"Jian Xi, why aren't you a girl?"
I couldn't help but chuckle softly.
"Shao Ciyan, are you here to go crazy?"
The boy suddenly stepped closer to me.
I instinctively took a step back but accidentally twisted my injured leg.
"Hiss—"
"Is your leg injury not healed yet?"
Shao Ciyan's expression turned serious, as if he was genuinely concerned about my condition.
"I'll carry you to the school infirmary, okay?"
He said this while reaching out to grab my hand.
"Shao Ciyan."
I didn't move, just calmly called his name.
He stopped his motion.
A gentle breeze lifted a corner of his coat.
It was then that I realized he was wearing the same outfit as when we first met.
But I no longer felt the same fluttering emotions I had back then.
"What are you doing right now?"
"After slapping me a few times, do you plan to give me a candy?"
Shao Ciyan's eyes revealed a hint of confusion.
"I'm not..."
But that was all he could say; he couldn't explain himself any further.
In the thick silence, he pressed his lips together tightly.
Suddenly, he let out a self-deprecating smile.
"You might not believe it if I told you."
"But this is mostly a habit I developed while being with you."
Before I could make a sarcastic remark, he spoke first.
Shao Ciyan stepped back, his gaze towards me ambiguous.
"If someone starts to like the type of person they dislike the most, does that make them quite foolish?"
It was a subtle probe.
I pretended not to notice his slightly tense expression.
"Yes."
"You really are quite foolish."
Almost as soon as I finished speaking, Shao Ciyan lowered his eyes, concealing his emotions.
He tugged at his lips and forced a nonchalant smile.
"Like this."
For a long time after that, Shao Ciyan didn't appear in front of me again.
I didn't take that day to heart.
I just thought it was a whim of Shao Ciyan's or perhaps a manifestation of possessiveness.
On the contrary, Lu Qingye began to appear hauntingly in every corner of my life.
Even in the dormitory.
He stood in front of my bed with a suitcase.
"Oh, Jian Xi, you're sleeping across from me."
I: "..."
It was a perfectly normal statement, but in his drawn-out tone and increasingly ambiguous gaze, it was hard not to let one's imagination run wild.
Our dormitory was a four-person room with bunk beds and desks below.
Boys rarely hung bed curtains.
But on the first night Lu Qingye moved in, he showed no restraint at all.
Before the lights went out, he lay sideways looking at me.
"Jian Xi."
The other two roommates happened to be in the bathroom. Only the two of us were left in the dorm. The moment he spoke, I had a bad feeling. "Shut up," I thought I had reminded him just in time. Then I turned towards the wall, facing away from him. But Lu Qingye seemed to ignore it and continued what he hadn't finished saying. "This is our first night together, good night." I took a deep breath and pulled the blanket up, ignoring him. But only I knew that I was trying to cover my flushed ears in vain.
The next day in class, I happened to have a class with Lu Qingye, so we left together. As soon as we stepped out of the dorm building, I saw Shao Ciyan, whom I hadn't seen for half a month. His gaze shifted back and forth between us, his eyes growing darker. "I'm curious, what could be a reason for transferring universities?" he directed his question at Lu Qingye. Lu Qingye smiled faintly. "It’s not like pretending to be a straight guy, deceiving others' feelings, and bullying them." I was taken aback; I didn't expect him to know about my situation with Shao Ciyan. Shao Ciyan's expression immediately darkened, and he fell silent. "Is there anything else, Mr. Straight Guy?" "My roommate and I are going to class."
