For so many years, the resentment Jian Qingtang held against me cannot be easily intimidated away with just a threat. However, she certainly didn't dare to act openly. So, when I was surrounded by a group of people looking for trouble, she didn't show up at all.
In the cafeteria, several boys approached me with their trays. As they passed by, the leader suddenly bumped into me, causing his tray to crash to the floor.
"Watch where you're going, you idiot!" he shouted, then shoved me hard.
This wasn't an accident. I noticed he had deliberately collided with me.
"I'm sorry," I said, hoping to downplay the situation. But he wouldn't let me leave.
"Do you think a simple apology will solve this?"
"Right now, either you go buy every dish from the food window where I get my meals, or you can kneel down and lick the floor clean. Then I'll accept your apology. How about that?"
This malicious way of provoking someone reminded me of someone else. I glanced over the group in front of me.
"Did Jian Qingtang send you?"
The group froze for a moment, probably surprised that I could guess the mastermind behind this so quickly. I scrutinized them; they seemed somewhat familiar. While searching my memory, I continued to engage with them.
"Bullying in public is something I can report to the police, you know?"
"You're not even graduated yet, and you want to make a mark in the records?" The leader, Big Guy, hesitated for a moment. Clearly, he was all brawn and no brains. I caught a glimpse of calluses on several of their hands in nearly the same spot, and it suddenly clicked. "I think I've seen you guys in the Athletic Club; you're freshmen, right?" Big Guy responded with a vague "uh-huh."
In the club, if you complete two years of credits, you can skip electives. Coincidentally, the Head of the Sports Club in the Athletic Club is my roommate. I decided to use that as leverage. "How much can Jian Qingtang give you? It's just a few meals' worth. I can get you out of taking electives directly; what do you say?"
"Tell me, what does Jian Qingtang want you to do to me?" Big Guy hesitated for a moment, weighing his options before deciding to switch sides. His voice was deep, and he usually sounded like he was yelling when he spoke. "Either we beat you up, or you lick the food off the floor clean."
I forced a smile, indifferent. Just as I was about to say something, an angry voice came from behind me. "Lick your mom!" Lu Qingye probably only heard that one line and thought I was being picked on. Without saying a word, he slammed a leftover plate from someone next to him onto Big Guy's face.
I thought to myself: "…This was already resolved…" After a brief scuffle, Big Guy was left holding his nose, looking like he was about to cry. "What the hell is going on?"
They helped the Big Guy leave first.
I turned back to look at Lu Qingye.
"Am I awesome or what? I took on four athletes by myself."
His eyes sparkled with youthful exuberance.
"Do you know what this means, Jian Xi? It means I'm in great shape!"
Shut up.
I stared at the bruises on his face, both amusing and infuriating me.
I pulled him to the school infirmary to treat his wounds.
The boy endured the pain while repeatedly boasting about how impressive he was.
"That was a fight, Jian Xi!"
"They probably weigh around a hundred pounds combined, and I took them down easily!"
Where's the hundred pounds...
I sighed helplessly and nodded.
"Yeah, you're really amazing."
"You're the strongest person I've seen in this school."
Lu Qingye nodded vigorously, breaking into a smile.
The wagging tail behind him was almost impossible to hide.
His expression of seeking praise was just like a dog running to its owner with a frisbee for the first time, wagging its tail excitedly.
