When I walked out the door, I heard a crackling sound coming from inside the house.
It was the sound of alcohol burning.
I closed the iron gate.
I locked it.
I walked along the beach with three men.
We came to another house.
I repeated the same process.
I entered the house.
I destroyed everything that could be destroyed.
I ignited everything that could be set on fire.
I walked out of the house and locked the door.
I lit a torch and threw it inside.
We approached the next house.
I repeated the same actions.
I entered the house.
I destroyed everything that could be destroyed.
I ignited everything that could be set on fire.
I walked out of the house and locked the door.
I lit a torch and threw it inside.
We arrived at the beach.
We watched the villa burn.
We watched the house burn.
We watched the entire island burn.
Flames soared into the sky.
Thick smoke billowed upwards.
The entire island was engulfed in flames.
I closed my eyes.
I took a deep breath.
I felt relaxed.
I felt pleased.
I feel free.
I know that I have been completely liberated.
I know that I am no longer the person I used to be.
I am Shirley.
I am the Queen.
We return to the hotel.
Alexey becomes anxious.
He is waiting for money sent by his father-in-law.
He believes that with his father-in-law's money, he can pursue me.
But he does not receive the money.
Instead, he receives his father-in-law in person.
His father-in-law appears in the hotel lobby.
He sits on the sofa, wearing gold-rimmed glasses and a silk robe, sipping red tea.
Alexey sees his father-in-law and is dumbfounded.
He never dreamed that his father-in-law would come in person.
What makes it even more embarrassing for him is that his father-in-law discusses Alexey's novel in front of everyone, raising irrelevant questions that make Alexey extremely uncomfortable.
Just then, I happen to walk into the lobby.
I witness Alexey's embarrassment.
I see Alexey's awkwardness.
I see Alexey's despair.
I know that what Alexey least wants me to see is his awkwardness and despair.
But unfortunately, I have already seen it.
Alexey wants to explain; he wants to tell me that his love for his deceased wife is sincere.
He did not deceive me.
He did not deceive anyone.
But he cannot find the right words.
He stutters and cannot speak.
Like a fool.
Like an idiot.
I look at him with disdain.
I laugh at him contemptuously.
I turned to leave.
Alexey caught up with me.
He grabbed my arm.
He said anxiously, "Shirley, let me explain."
"I'm not the kind of person you think I am."
"I really love my wife."
"I... I..."
I looked at him coldly and asked, "Do you love me?"
Alexey was stunned.
He stared at me blankly.
His eyes were vacant.
His eyes were confused.
His eyes were pained.
He murmured, "I... I don't know..."
"Maybe... maybe..."
"Maybe I just like your body."
"Maybe I just like your beauty."
"Maybe I just like your charm."
I smiled faintly and said, "Then don't say it out loud."
"Then keep it in your heart."
"Then take it to the grave."
I shook off his hand and walked forward.
Alexey stood there in a daze.
He looked at me with a lost expression.
His eyes were hollow.
His eyes were dazed.
His eyes were desperate.
I knew I had completely destroyed him.
I knew he was utterly finished.
I walked into the elevator.
Just as the elevator doors were about to close, a hand reached in.
The elevator doors reopened.
A little girl with pigtails walked in.
She approached me and looked up at me.
She handed me a note.
In her sweet voice, she said, "Sister, there's an uncle outside who asked me to give you this note."
"He said it contains his heartfelt words."
I took the note from her.
The little girl blinked her eyes and said, "Sister, I remember everything you said."
"I will tell that uncle."
I nodded slightly.
The little girl smiled, revealing two small canine teeth.
She was very cute.
I hoped she would always keep this innocence.
I wished she would never experience everything I had gone through.
I walked out of the elevator.
I opened the note.
I saw two lines:
Shirley, you misunderstood.
My feelings for you are not fondness.
But—
Love.
