Once again, a remark struck hard. Rao Jie took a deep breath and said, "I'm an adult now. It's not difficult for me to survive. I could give up on the graduate entrance exam and find a job that provides meals and accommodation. My friends can help me with that."
Looking at Rao Jie’s frustrated expression, it was clear she was very reluctant but felt helpless. After all, she had to face reality too!
Wu Rong didn’t say much more, just nodded to acknowledge her words. Watching Rao Jie force a smile, as if the light had dimmed from her face, he felt a pang of discomfort as she silently began to clear the dining table.
Although he often pointed out others' wounds in the past, he had never felt such guilt as he did now. Feeling uneasy, Wu Rong stood up and returned to his room.
Just as he was about to put aside all distracting thoughts, there was a sudden knock on the door.
Frowning, Wu Rong turned to open it and found Rao Jie standing there with a white porcelain plate that held cream puffs.
Rao Jie’s smile had returned. "Professor Wu, I heard from Wu Xin that you like desserts. When Wu Xin stayed here before, she left some ingredients for making desserts, so I tried making cream puffs. You can have some when you're hungry."
Wu Rong's frown deepened as he squinted at her and asked, "Why are you being so nice to me? Is this some sort of flattery?"
Was this really considered being nice?
Rao Jie paused for a moment before awkwardly laughing. "Professor Wu, it’s really not like that. I'm just expressing my gratitude. Plus, by making these, I can satisfy my own cravings too. I love desserts but don’t have the money to buy them."
Wu Rong continued to stare into Rao Jie’s eyes without saying anything.
Feeling the pressure of his gaze, Rao Jie forced herself to say, "Then I won’t disturb your work any longer." With that, she turned to leave.
But suddenly, a hand reached out and took the porcelain plate from her.
Rao Jie was taken aback as she heard a reserved yet eager voice above her head say, "Let me try one!"
Rao Jie had seriously considered looking for a job; she had asked the workaholic Wei Qian for help. During their college years, Wei Qian had juggled work and studies while also supporting their family.
Thus, she was familiar with various job opportunities and knew many employers; her connections were extensive. With her help, Rao Jie felt reassured.
Upon learning about Rao Jie's situation, Wei Qian readily agreed to assist her in finding suitable work.
At this stage, the main goal was to temporarily solve survival issues while also searching for formal internships or jobs.
Wei Qian indeed had many job options available but wanted to help Rao Jie filter out the best ones.
Rao Jie was obedient and entrusted this task entirely to Wei Qian.
In the last two days, Rao Jie focused on cooking meals and desserts for Wu Rong while tidying up the house.
She discovered that Wu Rong truly loved sweets—like a cat discovering dried fish—no matter how much staple food he ate; as long as there were desserts around, he would never refuse them.
Rao Jie enjoys making all kinds of desserts; it's her hobby. Coincidentally, Wu Rong also loves to eat them, which makes Rao Jie even happier while preparing them.
The two have managed to get along harmoniously over the past couple of days. Of course, this is largely due to Rao Jie overlooking Wu Rong's gruff demeanor and occasional sharp tongue. Rao Jie understands that Wu Rong means no harm; it's just his personality. His outward unfriendliness doesn't reflect his true nature, and as long as she tolerates it a bit, they can still get along.
Unfortunately, just as she has finally figured out how to interact with him, Rao Jie is about to leave. On this day, she plans to depart in the afternoon, and her belongings are already packed and piled by the door. When Wu Rong returns at noon, he sees them right away.
