The next day, I returned to school to grade papers. Looking at the familiar exam sheets, my thoughts couldn't help but drift far away. I remembered a foolish thing I did during Chen Wu's college entrance examination year.
It was the first day of the exam, and I had woken up early that morning, had breakfast, and then carried my backpack to school. When I arrived at Chen Wu's exam venue, I saw his name written on the ground. I crouched down and, with my damp fingers, wrote a few words beneath his name.
"Good luck! — Lin Wan"
That was the only thing I could do for him. After writing it, I left the exam room. That was the only time I had any connection to his college entrance examination.
In the days that followed, I lived in constant anxiety, worrying that he might not do well. It wasn't until the exams were over that I finally breathed a sigh of relief. I called him to ask how he had done.
"Chen Wu, how did you do?" I asked.
"Not bad," he replied casually.
"That's good," I said, feeling relieved.
"And you?" he asked.
"I'm doing okay too," I smiled.
"That's good," he responded.
"When are you coming back?" I asked.
"I have to wait for the results to come out," he said.
"Oh," I replied.
"You..." he hesitated.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing," he fell silent for a moment before speaking again.
"Oh," I said, feeling a bit disappointed inside.
"Then I'll hang up first," he said.
"Okay," I replied and hung up the phone.
That summer vacation was very boring for me.
I often think of Chen Wu and wonder how he did on his exam and when he would come back. However, I had no way to contact him. I could only wait patiently. Finally, on the day the results were released, I was sitting in front of my computer early, waiting for the score-checking system to open.
When the system opened, I entered Chen Wu's examination number and anxiously awaited the result. The score came out: 612, very high! I let out a sigh of relief. "Chen Wu, you did really well!" I couldn't help but send him a text message. "Thank you," he replied. "Which university do you plan to apply to?" I asked. "I haven't decided yet," he said. "Oh," I responded. "Which university do you hope I apply to?" he asked. "Me?" I was taken aback. "Yeah," he replied. "I... I hope you can apply to Jiangcheng University like me," I said. "Okay," he replied. "Really?" I asked in surprise. "Mm-hmm," he responded. "That's great!" I exclaimed excitedly. "Are you happy?" he asked. "Of course I'm happy," I said with a smile. "That's good," he replied.
That night, I had a dream where Chen Wu and I walked through the gates of Jiangcheng University together, hand in hand, strolling along the Linin Path s of the campus... Unfortunately, that dream could never come true. After that summer vacation, I never saw Chen Wu again. We completely lost contact. I never expected we would reunite now; it truly felt like fate's arrangement.
The next day, Chen Wu and I attended a class reunion together. Everyone was surprised that we had actually gotten married. "When did you two get married?" Song Mei asked in astonishment.
"Last month," I said with a smile.
"That was quick?" Zhou Wen replied with a laugh.
"What can I say? When you meet the right person, you just get married sooner," I joked.
"Wow, how romantic," Song Mei said enviously.
"Why did you get married so early?" Guo Li asked.
"We..." I was about to explain when Chen Wu suddenly took my hand.
"We met the right person, so we decided to get married early," he said.
"Wow, how romantic," Song Mei repeated, still envious.
"Were you two dating in high school?" Zhou Wen asked curiously.
"I..." I was about to deny it, but Chen Wu nodded.
"Yeah," he confirmed.
"Wow, you were really discreet," Song Mei exclaimed in surprise.
"No, we just kept it low-key," I laughed.
"Ah, it's a pity I was too focused on studying back then and didn't date at all," Guo Liang said regretfully.
"You should think about how to find a girlfriend," Zhou Wen teased him.
"I... I'm trying my best," Guo Liang replied awkwardly.
"You need to put in the effort," Song Mei encouraged as she patted his shoulder.
"Yeah," Guo Liang responded quietly.
As I listened to their conversation, I felt a bit uneasy.
I didn't expect Chen Wu to admit to our early relationship.
Although we weren't actually dating back then, there was no need for me to explain that now.
After all, it's all in the past.
Now, Chen Wu is my husband, and that's an unchangeable fact.
