"I will make them pay the price!"
I nodded gently, "I believe you."
That night, Wang Rui was brought before Li Cheng.
She knelt on the ground, crying and pleading, "Grand Preceptor, please, give me a chance."
"I am willing to serve you like an ox or a horse, do whatever you ask, just spare me this time."
Li Cheng looked at her coldly, his voice devoid of any emotion.
"You are not even worthy to carry my shoes."
Wang Rui's face instantly turned pale as paper, her eyes filled with despair.
"Grand Preceptor, I truly know I was wrong. Please, give me a chance."
" Yue is kind-hearted and unwilling to be stained with blood; I am not."
"The matter of the marriage exchange was originally overlooked because of my affection for Yue."
"I never expected you to be so unrepentant. Since you are so capable of jumping around, I will make sure you can no longer jump."
Li Cheng sneered and slowly stood up.
"Someone, take her away."
"Ten strikes on the legs every day, ten lashes with a whip, only allowed to drink water. If you can survive a month, I will let you go."
"Yes!"
Wang Rui's cries gradually faded away, but my heart felt no ripples.
All of this was her own doing.
If she hadn't clung on and schemed step by step, how could there have been this next time?
I sighed and softly said, "Li Cheng, who kidnapped me?"
"It was the Fourth Prince's people. They devised for Wang Rui to be married off to the Second Prince. Somehow they learned that the the Wang Family wanted you to take her place and guided Wang Rui to bring you back, drugging you so that you would get into the bridal sedan chair. Then Wang Rui could take the opportunity to escape and had someone kidnap the sedan chair. This way, the the Wang Family, the Second Prince, and I would all have disputes over your disappearance and they could use you as leverage to threaten me."
Leaning in his embrace, I felt his ambiguous emotions. "I'm sorry for not listening to you and causing you trouble."
"You’re fine, but I’ve dragged you into this. I will definitely protect you and won’t let it happen again."
Listening to his vague words, I sensed that his anger was not solely due to this incident; there seemed to be something else I didn't know. I didn’t ask further, knowing he would tell me in due time.
After lying in the room for over ten days, my body finally recovered. Standing by the window, I gazed at the bamboo forest outside, feeling a sense of calm within.
I instructed Bi'er, "Prepare a carriage to send Wang Rui to the village. If anyone asks, just say it was my decision."
Bi'er nodded and quietly replied, "Yes."
Her eyes were filled with worry, as if she wanted to say something.
I understood she was concerned that Wang Rui might return.
I softly said, "After enduring so many days of torment, consider it a repayment for my years of suffering. I ultimately cannot match her malice. Since I've given her a chance at life, her fate is no longer my concern."
"If she wants to come back, it will depend on her own abilities."
Bi'er slightly nodded and turned to leave the room.
In the evening, I sat alone at the stone table beside the bamboo forest, drinking tea. It had been a long time since I had experienced such tranquility.
Suddenly, a pair of hands embraced me from behind. The familiar scent filled my nose, and my heart instantly settled.
"What are you doing?" Li Cheng's gentle voice rang in my ear.
I replied softly, "Nothing much, just wanted to be alone for a while."
"Oh?" Li Cheng sat down beside me and gently held my hand. "Are you really okay?"
