I shook my head and said, "It's nothing."
"How have you been lately?"
Li Cheng hesitated for a moment and softly said, " Wang Rui injured the person who was escorting her on the way and ran away."
I wasn't surprised; I simply replied, "Since this is the path she has chosen, let her be."
"If she can turn over a new leaf, perhaps there is still a way for her to survive."
"But if she remains stubborn and unrepentant, no one can help her."
Li Cheng looked at me, a hint of complexity flashing in his eyes.
"Li Cheng, do you have something to say to me? You know I've been waiting for you for a long time."
Li Cheng was slightly taken aback, then he shook his head with a bitter smile.
"Indeed, nothing can be hidden from you."
"I do have something I've kept from you."
"What is it?" I asked eagerly.
Li Cheng spoke softly, "Actually, my family was once very prominent."
"My father was a general of the current dynasty, and my mother was the sister of the Empress."
"But when I was eight years old, my father offended the Court Nobility and was falsely accused of treason; the Emperor ordered the Mass Execution of the Entire Family."
"My mother, in order to protect me, had the guards take me out of the palace to my Maternal Grandfamily."
"But on the way, we were ambushed."
"The two guards died trying to save me."
As he spoke, his voice trembled slightly.
My heart tightened, and I reached out to gently hold his hand.
"Li Cheng..."
I called his name softly, filled with concern.
I couldn't imagine how he had endured that dark period all alone.
Li Cheng took a deep breath and said softly, "I have been injured, and the doctor said my body has been fundamentally harmed, so I have not been able to recover."
"But I cannot accept that my father was wronged like this, nor can I accept that our family is being harmed."
"So I entered the palace to lie low and gather strength, waiting for the right moment to seek justice for my family and take revenge on those who framed us."
"Over the years, I have learned to endure, to observe, and to survive in the gaps of power."
"I have always been looking for opportunities to clear my family's name."
I stared blankly at Li Cheng, feeling a mix of emotions.
A hint of coldness flashed in his eyes as he continued, "My father lived a life of integrity, loyal to the country, yet he was slandered by those treacherous officials, accused of colluding with the enemy."
"My mother, in order to protect me and avoid harming the innocent, dismissed everyone in the household and faced those villains alone."
Li Cheng's voice grew lower, his hands clenched into fists, filled with hatred.
I said softly, "So your pursuit of power is for revenge?"
Li Cheng nodded, "Yes. After gaining power, I went through historical records and combined them with what I learned back then. Following the clues, I found out the truth and identified my enemies."
"Who is it?"
"Shen Qing—General Shen. Back then, General Shen was just a Cavalry General without any real ability; he relied on money to buy military achievements to earn that title. He always wanted to rise in rank, but my father knew he was incompetent and kept him suppressed. Eventually, he orchestrated a meeting between his daughter—now Consort Xian—and the emperor. Consort Xian then used some means to win the emperor's favor. Shen Qing resented my father and conspired with other political enemies to bring him down. This led to the accusations of collusion with the enemy. Over these years, under Consort Xian's protection, that incompetent man grew ambitious and acted recklessly; even the emperor knows this but is just looking for an opportunity to deal with him."
I looked at him, feeling a pang of sorrow in my heart.
