No More Meetings 4: Unexpected Changes

On Christmas Eve, my best friend and I planned to spend Christmas in New York. To make it in time for the trip, I worked day and night on my assignments, and eventually collapsed from exhaustion. At first, I just felt weak and had no appetite; I looked terribly thin. Later, I suddenly developed a fever, and by the time my friend arrived, I had already fainted. 0

When I woke up, I found myself in a hospital bed with an IV drip. My friend, who used to be so optimistic, now had tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, Yueyue. It's all my fault for not taking care of you." 0

"Your parents are on their way; we're taking you home," she said, breaking down in sobs. 0

The doctor who came to check on me looked at me with pity when he saw that I was awake. He spoke in awkward Mandarin, "You are a strong girl. Everyone has to die eventually; all you can do is enjoy the time you have left and do what you want to do..." 0

It was very straightforward and hit hard. I managed to force a smile and nodded at him. 0

This past year, I had no idea how many injections I had received or how many medications I had taken; the pain in my body had driven me to the brink of collapse several times. But having experienced life and death once, I desperately wanted to live. As long as I was alive, everything would gradually get better. 0

However, the illness did not spare me. Despite my best efforts, my condition worsened faster than expected. I lay there quietly, feeling unusually calm, only thinking about that one wish that remained unfulfilled. I couldn't help but sigh silently; it seemed destined to end in regret. 0

I don't know how long it had been when my parents arrived; I had already fallen asleep again. "Yueyue, we're taking you home..." In a daze, I heard them speaking. 0

I struggled to open my eyes and noticed they looked even older than before. My usually vibrant father had even turned half of his hair gray. 0

I pretended to be relaxed and said, "Mom and Dad, I've missed you so much! I want to go home; I want to eat Mom's Stewed Crucian Carp." 0

"Okay, okay, okay. When we get home, whatever you want to eat, Mom will make it for you." 0
After saying this, Mom turned her back, her shoulders slightly trembling. 0
For a moment, no one spoke. 0

After a week in the hospital, my parents stayed by my side every day, never leaving me. 0
I wanted them to go back and rest with Xiaoya, but they refused to leave no matter what. 0
Xiaoya took care of my withdrawal from school, and on the day of my departure, my professor came to see me off with a group of classmates. 0
I hugged each of them goodbye, thanking them for their care. 0
"Xiaoya, you've already done enough for me. You should stay here and finish your studies; don't waste any more time on me." 0
"What are you talking about? You know I came here because of you! I've already explained the situation to the professor and arranged for a leave of absence." 0
"Thank you, Xiaoya..." I held back my tears and spoke in a muffled voice. 0
After returning home, I spent every day with my parents. 0
They took turns making the dishes I loved, and my illness had caused me to lose weight, but I gradually regained some color in my face. 0
I enjoyed the time spent with them; it was simple yet pleasant. 0
I admit I regretted it; I shouldn't have given up my parents in pursuit of my dreams. 0
If I could have obediently accepted their arrangements and found an ordinary job with a nine-to-five schedule, wouldn't that have been good? 0
Then I wouldn't have lost Lu Feng. 0
But everything has already changed; there's no going back. 0
I could feel myself growing weaker, like an elderly person nearing the end of life. 0
At night, when pain tormented me, I could only bite down on my fist and cover myself with the blanket while softly groaning. 0
I comforted myself over and over again that everything would be better by morning. 0
Yes, when dawn comes, everything will be alright. 0
