Chapter Six Soul Tree (2)
Originally, I wanted Er Dan to call a few more villagers to keep watch. After all, the more people there are, the stronger the Yang Qi, which would be better. However, Er Dan relayed my suggestion to the villagers, but they were unwilling. It’s important to note that this was not just any ordinary night watch; there would be ghosts coming to find Cuihua. At that time, not only would they be unable to stop the ghosts from taking her away, but they themselves could also be scared to death by the ghosts. So every villager shook their heads and refused to help.
Of course, we couldn't blame the Villagers for being afraid. Back then, the Countryside was still very superstitious, and everyone firmly believed that there were Ghosts in the world. Moreover, there was a rumor in the Countryside that those who saw ghosts would have bad luck, which made them hesitant to agree to Er Dan's request.
Although we couldn't get the villagers to help, this commotion made the Villagers suspicious and paranoid. Every household prepared their meals early, and as soon as it got dark, they tightly closed their Main Entrance and hid under their blankets because they knew that tonight a Dirty Thing would come to the Village to claim Cuihua's life.
Suddenly, the entire village was shrouded in the shadow of Evil Spirits and Vengeful Ghosts, with everyone in a state of panic.
That day, before sunset, Er Dan's Home had already prepared dinner. After dinner, it was almost dark, and Er Dan had securely locked the Main Entrance.
Speaking of which, Cuihua was also very scared; she even dragged Er Dan along while cooking. However, shortly after dinner, Cuihua suddenly got up and opened the Main Entrance, then walked straight outside.
At that moment, I didn’t pay much attention and thought that Cuihua was just going to the bathroom. But since it was dark outside now, I felt a bit worried about her going out alone and said to Er Dan, “Er Dan, what is your Daughter-in-law doing going out? Why don’t you go with her?”
Er Dan looked puzzled and asked me back, “Cuihua went out?”
I nodded and pointed at the already opened Main Entrance, saying, “Yes, she just went out; it seems like she’s going to the bathroom.”
In the Countryside, earthen houses generally do not have bathrooms; toilets are usually set up outside as outhouses.
Er Dan looked at the open Main Entrance, scratched his head, and said, “No way! My house's toilet is behind the kitchen outside; you don’t need to go out through the front door to use it. She was so scared just now; how could she go out alone?”
Upon hearing this, both Er Dan and I almost exclaimed in unison: something big has happened; Cuihua must have been possessed by a ghost!
Immediately, we rushed outside. Fortunately, we discovered it in time; Cuihua hadn’t gone far. We caught up with her just around the corner after she stepped out. However, at this point, Cuihua appeared dazed and unresponsive; no matter what we asked her, she wouldn’t reply and stared blankly ahead like someone who had lost their soul.
There was no way out, so we brought Cuihua back home and helped her onto the bed. I then placed a large pair of scissors that I had prepared earlier on her bedside. Er Dan moved a chair and sat down in front of her bed, beginning to keep watch through the night.
This night was destined to be anything but peaceful...
The night quickly deepened, and the pitch-black silence enveloped the village nestled in the mountains.
As mentioned before, villages in the mountains have little entertainment at night, especially tonight, with every household's doors tightly shut and everyone going to bed early. Even if a few houses had lights on inside, the faint glow seeping through the windows did nothing to pierce the heavy darkness. From a distance, those small lights looked more like hidden ghost fires in the dark, intensifying the sense of fear that permeated the mountain village at night.
In the stillness of the deep night, this description perfectly fit the village at that moment. Inside and outside the houses, there was an eerie silence. Er Dan and I stood guard by Cuihua's bed, waiting for this long night to pass...
Although this night was incredibly tense and frightening for us, filled with an eerie atmosphere, we were still human. As each hour dragged on, our spirits began to wane, and by the end, I couldn't even recall when I had dozed off.
Suddenly, a series of dog barks jolted us awake. The barking initially came from the edge of the village but quickly escalated into a chorus as if something was rushing from the village entrance into the village itself.
Er Dan immediately became anxious, fidgeting restlessly until he broke into a sweat because we both knew that dogs don’t bark for no reason.
While it was common for dogs in Village to bark at night—perhaps at wild boars or hares—this was different. Normally, when dogs barked, those wild animals would run away in fear. But this time was clearly different; the barking continued all the way from the village entrance to Village itself, indicating that someone had entered. Moreover, this person was not one of the villagers because dogs wouldn’t bark at familiar faces.
Thinking about this made us increasingly uneasy; we began to suspect that it must be a ghost. The elders always said that dogs are very perceptive and can see spirits and other dirty things. In Countryside Village, whenever someone died, for one or two nights afterward, the village dogs would inexplicably bark wildly. What exactly they saw could not be explained scientifically.
The barking quickly extended outside Er Dan's home. Amidst the intermittent barking, I listened closely and surprisingly heard “clap clap” footsteps outside!
The footsteps were not very clear, but my intuition told me they were indeed footsteps.
Once those clapping footsteps reached outside Er Dan's house, they stopped. Then came a creaking sound from Main Entrance; it was unmistakably the sound of a door opening...
At this point, Er Dan could no longer contain himself and hurriedly asked me if it was a ghost coming!
I didn't need Er Dan to remind me; I knew that it must be a ghost or monster at the door. So, I mustered my courage and hurried to the back of the Main Entrance, shouting out towards the outside, "What kind of bull demons and snake spirits are messing around outside? If you push the door again, I'll splash you with urine, you little ghost!"
Surprisingly, when I yelled like that, the thing outside actually stopped. However, it didn't leave; instead, it continued to wander around outside the house. Looking back on that moment now, the sound of those footsteps still sends chills down my spine!
At that time, I tiptoed to the window and peered outside through the gap. I then saw a tall, dark figure dragging a thick Hemp Rope in its hand. The other end of the long rope was dragging along the Ground, as it walked back and forth in front of the house...
Why do I refer to it as a thing rather than a person? That's because although it looked human at first glance, I couldn't make out its body or features; all I could see was a dark shadow taller than an average person.
Seeing this scene before me truly frightened me; all the hairs on my body stood on end, and my back was completely soaked with sweat. This thing was not a ghost because ordinary ghosts couldn't look like this or be so tall. It was very likely some kind of spirit or creature.
Just as I was secretly watching the shadow outside, Er Dan suddenly called out from behind me...
I was startled and turned around to look, my heart immediately trembling. To my shock, I saw that a long Hemp Rope had somehow appeared at Cuihua's bedside, and at that moment, Cuihua had wrapped the other end of the rope around her neck, pulling it tightly with all her might. Er Dan was desperately trying to pull Cuihua's hands away, but even though Er Dan was a big man used to heavy labor, he seemed unable to budge Cuihua's grip at all; it was as if she had become incredibly strong!
Looking at Cuihua, her face had turned purple from lack of oxygen, her eyes bulging out in a terrifying way. But what was even more chilling was that despite wrapping herself in the rope until her face turned purple, her mouth twisted into an eerie smile.
Seeing this scared not only Er Dan but also me; my heart felt like it was in my throat. I hurriedly rushed to the bedside and grabbed the large scissors I had prepared earlier. With a quick snip at the Hemp Rope, I cut through it.
Although the rope was severed instantly, Cuihua suddenly sat up as if possessed, pushing both me and Er Dan to the ground with immense strength—strength that was far beyond what an ordinary Woman should possess.
After forcefully knocking us down, Cuihua dashed straight towards the already opened Main Entrance where that thing outside had been...
