Ghostly Hitchhiker 2: Uneasy

On the first day of driving, I was quite excited, but the long journey made me a bit anxious. With a truck full of goods, I had to take the back roads and deliver everything to the market before dawn. To boost my courage, I turned on the radio. The signal was poor, crackling with static, and it was surprisingly broadcasting a horror story. I frowned and quickly switched to another channel, only to find it was telling ghost stories as well. Feeling frustrated, I turned off the radio and forced myself to focus on driving. 0

After about an hour on the road, I came across a village. There were streetlights, and I could finally see that it was Sanliqiao Village. Just as I was about to drive through, I noticed a young woman standing ahead. She was holding a swaddled baby in her arms and waving at me. 0

I thought for a moment; this woman must be taking her child to see a doctor at this late hour, which couldn't have been easy. So, I pulled over and opened the car door. When she saw me stop, she lifted her face and smiled faintly at me. Now I could see her clearly. To be honest, she was quite beautiful, though her complexion was a bit pale, and she held the swaddled baby tightly. 0

"Where are you going? I can give you a ride," I said as I got out and opened the back door for her. However, she didn't sit there; instead, she opened the front passenger door and sat down with the baby. 0

I didn't think much of it; perhaps she preferred sitting in the front. "Thank you, I'm going to the city," she replied weakly. I nodded and drove forward. 0

As we traveled, I occasionally glanced at her out of the corner of my eye. I noticed that she was completely soaked; her hair was still dripping wet. Yet she was dressed very lightly, as if she had no means of staying dry. I furrowed my brow, feeling something was off. It hadn't rained today; how could she be so drenched? Moreover, the baby in her arms had been crying softly, its cries resembling those of a kitten. 0

"Is your child sick?" I couldn't help but ask. 0

She nodded slightly, her expression sorrowful. "Yes, he has a very serious illness." 0
"Then we need to hurry to the hospital. Why are we only going now?" 0
She sighed and remained silent. 0
I thought to myself that there might be some unspoken difficulties, so I stopped asking questions and focused on driving. 0
Soon, we reached the edge of the city, and dawn had broken. 0
I pulled over and reminded her, "We're here." 0
She nodded, slowly got out of the car while holding the child, and stood by the roadside waving at me. 0
I smiled and drove away. 0
When I got home, I was extremely tired; I took a quick shower and went to sleep. 0
After waking up, I remembered that young woman and felt that something was off. 0
Her face was frighteningly pale, and her child had been crying continuously. 0
The more I thought about it, the more uneasy I felt, so I called a friend to tell him about it. 0
My friend was shocked when he heard this and said, "You’re really lucky; you encountered something strange on your first drive." 0
After experiencing such an eerie event, I returned to my apartment feeling utterly exhausted. 0
I didn’t even change my clothes; I just collapsed into bed. 0
In my dreams, I saw that woman again. 0
She still looked pale, stunningly beautiful, sitting in the passenger seat, dripping wet. 0
Suddenly, she turned her head sharply and glared at me fiercely. 0
"Have you seen my child?" 0
I trembled as I replied, "No... I haven't seen her." 0
"You’re lying!" 0
She suddenly grabbed me and screamed desperately, "Give me back my child! Give me back my child!" 0
"Ah!" 0
I screamed as I jolted awake from the nightmare. 0
My clothes were drenched in cold sweat. 0
Rubbing my eyes, I noticed that it had already grown dark outside. 0
Only then did I realize that my eyes were bloodshot. 0
Checking the time, I was shocked to see it was almost six o'clock. 0
I couldn’t believe I had slept for so long and had such a nightmare. 0
Thinking back to the dream made me feel a wave of dread wash over me. 0

Could it be that the woman I encountered earlier was not human? Otherwise, why would she ask me if I had seen her child? The thought sent chills down my spine, and I broke out in a cold sweat. At that moment, I noticed a large puddle of water on the passenger seat. 0

What the hell! 0

I stared at the puddle in horror, feeling a wave of dread wash over me. After dinner, as darkness began to fall, I couldn't shake off the unease creeping into my heart. The thought of having to drive again at night made me increasingly anxious. 0

I would have to take this route several more times. What if I encountered that woman again tonight? Just thinking about that possibility made me shiver with fear. 0

I didn't want to continue. But what would happen to the car I bought with all my savings if I quit? After much contemplation, I realized I couldn't bear to give up. 0

Well, maybe tonight wouldn't be so unlucky after all? Holding onto a glimmer of hope, I steeled myself and hit the road. 0

Before long, it was time to head out. Gritting my teeth, I drove towards the vegetable wholesale market in Lin City. 0
