"Green Lotus, prepare the horse. I, the Empress, must personally visit that villa," Chu Yunqing said as she stood up, a glimmer of determination flashing in her eyes.
"Your Majesty, this is absolutely not advisable!" Green Lotus exclaimed in alarm. "That villa has an unknown background; with your esteemed status, how can you risk yourself?"
"It is precisely because of its unknown background that I, the Empress, must see it for myself," Chu Yunqing replied firmly. "Rest assured, I, the Empress, know what I am doing."
As night fell, a bright moon hung high in the sky, surrounded by twinkling stars. Dressed in dark clothing for stealth, Chu Yunqing quietly slipped out of the palace.
Outside the city, the night breeze was gentle, and the shadows of trees danced. Chu Yunqing rode her horse to the vicinity of the villa, dismounted, tied her horse behind a large tree, and proceeded alone.
The outer walls of the villa loomed high, and inside, lights were bright with faint sounds of voices. After observing for a moment, Chu Yunqing found a spot with weaker defenses. With a light step and like a ghost, she silently scaled the wall.
Inside the courtyard, there was a rockery and ponds, pavilions and towers—exquisitely arranged yet exuding an eerie silence.
Chu Yunqing moved cautiously, hiding behind the rockery as she carefully observed her surroundings.
"The Emperor has arrived!"
Suddenly, a sharp announcement shattered the tranquility of the courtyard.
Chu Yunqing's heart skipped a beat. How could Xiao Jingyan be here?
Holding her breath, she peeked out to see Xiao Jingyan in a black brocade robe, his expression stern as he strode toward the main hall surrounded by a group of guards.
Chu Yunqing felt even more puzzled. Why did Xiao Jingyan come here in the middle of the night? Could it be that he is also related to “Ayan”?
She decided to continue her investigation and quietly followed behind Xiao Jingyan, arriving outside the main hall. Through the crack in the window, she observed the situation inside.
“Your Majesty, I pay my respects to you. Long live the Emperor!” Lord Wang and Lord Zhao knelt on the ground, trembling as they bowed to Xiao Jingyan.
“Get up,” Xiao Jingyan said coldly, without a hint of emotion.
“Thank you, Your Majesty.” Lord Wang and Lord Zhao stood up but did not dare to meet Xiao Jingyan's gaze.
“I have come today for…” Xiao Jingyan paused suddenly, his eyes sharp as he scanned Lord Wang and Lord Zhao. “It is for ‘Ayan’.”
Lord Wang and Lord Zhao's faces turned pale instantly, their bodies trembling uncontrollably.
Chu Yunqing listened intently from outside, her heart stirred by waves of shock. Xiao Jingyan indeed knew about “Ayan”!
She focused intently on the three people inside, wanting to learn more about “Ayan”.
Xiao Jingyan's voice was as cold as frost, devoid of any emotion: “I will ask you again, who exactly is ‘Ayan’? Do not try to evade my question!”
With a thud, Lord Wang fell to his knees, his forehead pressed tightly against the cold ground, his voice trembling as he said, “Your Majesty, forgive me. I… I truly do not know anything about ‘Ayan’!”
Lord Zhao also knelt down, lowering his head and remaining silent.
"Hmph!" Xiao Jingyan was filled with rage as he slammed his hand on the table beside him, causing the teacup to jump and tea to splash everywhere. "Do you think I am a three-year-old child? If it weren't for the seriousness of the matter, why would I come here in the middle of the night?"
He suddenly stood up and began pacing back and forth in the room, exuding an intimidating chill.
Lord Wang and Lord Zhao were so frightened that they didn't dare to breathe, burying their heads even lower, afraid of provoking Xiao Jingyan.
"You may not speak, but I can guess a few things," Xiao Jingyan stopped in his tracks, his sharp gaze sweeping over the two men. "'Ayan' is closely related to me and to you, isn't it?"
"Your Majesty..." Lord Wang tried to argue but was interrupted by Xiao Jingyan.
"I will give you one last chance. Will you speak or not?" Xiao Jingyan drew his sword from his waist, pointing the blade directly at Lord Wang, his tone chilling.
