Seeing the fox stealing the fragrance, Xing Ruyi felt a bit disgusted, but since it wasn't a kiss on the cheek, she could barely tolerate it. Of course, she was also worried that if she loosened her grip, this cunning little fox would escape.
"Stinky Fox, Seductive Fox, where's my shoe? Where did you take it? If you don't bring it back soon, I'll pull out your fox tail and use it as a broom."
"My fox tail doesn't have much fur; how could it be used as a broom? Are you really that dim-witted?" The White Fox lazily rolled its eyes. "Hey, when did you become a merchant? That half bottle of jade cream doesn't even contain any Musk."
Xing Ruyi's cheeks flushed slightly as she retorted, "What do you know? Whether or not there's Musk is no longer important."
"You know?" The White Fox scoffed, its eyes filled with disdain.
"It’s both fate and misfortune. That child was never destined to be born; going now might lessen the pain. In the future, there will be other fates." Xing Ruyi turned her face away. "Stop interrupting me. Where's my shoe? Hurry up and bring it back."
"Once the shoe is given away, there's no getting it back," the White Fox flicked Xing Ruyi's hand with its paw. "Losing a tail isn't a big deal for me, but if you really pull it off, it won't do you any good, right? Let go before you get covered in fox fur; that wouldn't be good."
Xing Ruyi felt a wave of frustration and nearly bit her own lip. After some thought, she reluctantly loosened her grip on the fox's tail. "Stinky Fox, you wicked little creature that bullies people."
"Your vocabulary is really pitiful," the White Fox said while patting its forehead with its paw. "Next time, can you use different adjectives? Like Handsome Fox or Beautiful Fox? Or just call me Darling Fox?"
"Ew, that's disgusting!"
"No, that's called mushy, not disgusting!" The White Fox corrected her seriously.
Xing Ruyi rolled her eyes at the White Fox and decided not to engage with this vain creature that was more human than humans themselves and had an abundance of twisted logic.
Actually, Xing Ruyi is not a person from this era; she comes from thousands of years in the future and is a typical homebody. In her spare time, she makes a living through coding and occasionally creates DIY skincare products for fun. As for how she got here, she can no longer remember, but she guesses it could only be one of a few scenarios: perhaps she was struck by misfortune while walking down the street, or maybe she fell ill and naturally passed away, or it could be that she was originally taken here by that Stinky Fox.
Since she is here, she decides to make the best of it.
In her previous life, she was also an orphan; her parents passed away early, leaving her to fend for herself in the world. Therefore, she does not mind living here. Moreover, there is a fox accompanying her, even if it is somewhat annoying. As for her strange abilities, Xing Ruyi is too lazy to explore them; if the fox can talk, there’s nothing she cannot accept. Thus, just like in her previous life, she stays at home, only this time the location has changed to the Tang Dynasty, her small dwelling has become Ruyi Workshop, and her main business is selling Rouge and Face Powder, that’s all.
With a glimmer in her eyes, she sees Chang Tai leading a few familiar Yard Officers about to pass by her door. She shoots a sharp glare at the fox and steps out to greet them: “Brother Chang, Brother Sheng, are you going on official business?”
“It’s not exactly official business; we just have some matters left unresolved from that previous case,” Chang Tai replies with a simple smile.
“Oh, can you tell me about it? As you can see, my shop isn’t busy at the moment; I’m quite bored. If it’s not state secrets, why not share some idle chatter with me? It would at least relieve my boredom,” Xing Ruyi says as she sets out tea and snacks on the table, clearly indicating her intention to listen.
Shengzi wipes his mouth and is about to step inside when he is stopped by Chang Tai.
“It’s not really a secret. During the interrogation earlier, Yu Niang confessed that after abusing her mother-in-law to death with her husband Wang, they buried the body under the old Mulberry Tree behind their house to cover up their crime. When neighbors asked about it, they claimed that the mother-in-law had gone far away to visit relatives. Later, they conspired with Zhang to kill her husband and buried him under the old Mulberry Tree as well. Now that Yu has been punished, the magistrate has ordered us to exhume their bodies for burial on an appropriate day to put this tragic matter to rest.”
“Isn’t this your suggestion, Brother Chang?” Xing Ruyi asks as she pours two cups of tea—one for Chang Tai and another for Shengzi: “Since it’s hard work digging up trees and soil, why not have some tea here first? It will save you from being thirsty later. You gentlemen don’t need to be polite; although my tea isn’t precious, it’s still hard to find elsewhere.”
“Ruyi, you speak true; I can attest to that,” Shengzi says as he finishes his cup and hands it back to Xing Ruyi: “Could you pour me another cup? In Luoyang City, if we’re talking about precious teas, yours wouldn’t rank high; but if we’re talking about taste and appearance, you come second to none.”
“Shh! Under the Empress's feet, even if it's true, we mustn't speak carelessly,” Xing Ruyi gestures subtly. Shengzi quickly covers his mouth and squints his eyes into narrow slits while nodding repeatedly.
Though Chang Tai tries hard to suppress his amusement, the corners of his mouth still lift slightly.
"Here, let me give you something else." Xing Ruyi handed a bag of leaves to Chang Tai. "Although you are both righteous and do good deeds, life and death are separate, and the body has been buried under the old tree for so long that it is bound to bring some bad luck. These are pomelo leaves; they are perfect for bathing to ward off misfortune."
"Thank you, Ruyi!"
Chang Tai nodded in gratitude, but Xing Ruyi couldn't help but curl her lips in displeasure.
"It's just a bag of leaves; there's no need to thank me. Brother Chang, you really are too polite."
Chang Tai opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by Shengzi.
