Shen Xingyu waited for a moment when a trembling woman emerged from the bushes. She appeared to be in her fifties, dressed simply, and was shaking as she looked at Shen Xingyu. "You... you are Mr. Shen, right?"
Shen Xingyu nodded slightly, studying the woman. He felt as though he had seen her somewhere before but couldn't recall where.
"Why are you here?" Shen Xingyu's voice was cold and hard; he did not like others disturbing Ye Wanwan.
"I... I was just passing by," the woman said, clearly terrified of Shen Xingyu. She lowered her head, not daring to look at his face.
"Passing by?" Shen Xingyu scoffed. "If you were just passing by, how do you know my last name is Shen?"
"I... I heard it from someone else," the woman said nervously, wringing her hands. She stammered, "I really was just passing by. I'll leave now."
After saying this, the woman turned to leave, but had only taken a couple of steps when Shen Xingyu called out to her.
"Stop." Shen Xingyu pointed at the chrysanthemums in her basket and asked, "Did you bring these flowers?"
"Yes," the woman nodded, but then quickly shook her head. "No, no."
Seeing her flustered expression, Shen Xingyu strode over and stood in front of her, looking down at her. "Is it or isn't it?"
"It is." The woman dared not lie any longer and said timidly, "I brought them."
"Since you brought them, why did you say you didn't at first?" Shen Xingyu's gaze was sharp, as if he could see through her.
"I..." The woman was very anxious; she looked around and rubbed her hands on her clothes. "I was just passing by, Mr. Shen. I really mean no harm."
"Tell me, who sent you here?" Shen Xingyu did not believe her words; he never believed in coincidences or passersby.
The woman's face turned pale as she bit her lip and hesitated before saying, "It... it was my husband who sent me."
"Your husband?" Shen Xingyu glanced at the woman again; the more he looked at her, the more familiar she seemed. "Who is your husband?"
"My husband is Zhang Dashan." The woman dared not lie anymore and said meekly, "Three years ago he quit his job and came home. He became paranoid and always said sorry to Miss Ye. He often had nightmares at night. He asked me to come here from our hometown to burn incense for Miss Ye, so I came."
"Zhang Dashan?" Shen Xingyu was familiar with that name; he knew Zhang Dashan was their former housekeeper—honest and simple-minded. After Ye Wanwan passed away not long after, he had resigned and gone home.
Shen Xingyu looked at the woman again. "Besides asking you to do this, did he ask you to do anything else?"
The woman recalled for a moment and slowly said, "After he went home, he often woke up in the middle of the night screaming about how Wanwan wasn't his fault and telling someone not to come after him."
Upon hearing this, Shen Xingyu paused slightly and glanced at Little Ma beside him.
Little Ma understood and nodded gravely.
"Does he have any other activities?" Shen Xingyu continued to ask.
"He also asked me to burn incense," the woman said. "After he woke up in the middle of the night, he told me to burn incense for Miss Ye, saying it would make him feel more at ease."
"So, after he left my house three years ago, he started behaving strangely?" Shen Xingyu felt that Zhang Dashan was likely connected to Ye Wanwan's death.
"Yes," the woman nodded. "When he left home, he was fine, but after hearing about Miss Ye's death, he became paranoid. People in our village say it's because he's done something wrong that he's become like this."
"I see," Shen Xingyu said coldly.
The woman looked at him awkwardly. "Mr. Shen, can I leave now?"
"Yes, go ahead," Shen Xingyu waved his hand.
Upon hearing this, the woman felt relieved and ran away.
Shen Xingyu watched her back until she disappeared at the entrance of the tomb.
"Mr. Shen, do you think this Zhang Dashan knows something?" Little Ma stood beside Shen Xingyu and said slowly, "Otherwise, why would he have nightmares and ask his wife to burn incense?"
"Exactly," Shen Xingyu nodded. "This Zhang Dashan must have some secrets; it seems I need to find him and ask."
