Yan Chengjie held a Panda Brand cigarette in his mouth, enveloped in a haze of white smoke. He walked lightly to the bedside, his dark, deep-set eyes fixed intently on Chen Li, who lay asleep on the bed.
Her face was pale, her lips tinged with blue. If it weren't for the steady sound of her breathing reaching Yan Chengjie's ears, he might have long mistaken her for a corpse and sent her to the morgue.
He furrowed his attractive brows, unable to believe that the body of this still somewhat beautiful woman could be so frail. If he hadn't happened upon her by chance, she would surely have already fallen victim to those two thugs.
Tonight, he had a dinner meeting with the chairman of Empire Group at Holy Land Royal Pavilion, dining from seven-thirty until nearly midnight. During that time, not a single constructive topic was discussed. He knew that men typically avoided talking business at the dinner table, but the chairman was far too talkative, discussing nothing but beautiful women.
Although Yan Chengjie was not one to refuse women, he understood moderation. The body is the foundation of revolution; if one's health fails, everything else is lost—including women!
In business matters, he was preoccupied with his half-sister—after his parents' death, although she did not share his surname, she was his only family left in this world. Thus, he declined the Empire's invitation to enjoy a night out in a Lamborghini at a hotel.
As he drove home, he noticed a strange woman hurriedly walking down the street, followed stealthily by two men. Those two timid men were clearly up to no good.
A sense of foreboding suddenly washed over him, yet he hesitated about whether to intervene.
In truth, standing up for others was not Yan Chengjie's usual style. Getting involved could lead to unnecessary trouble, and besides, he wasn't in the mood to wade through such murky waters.
However, just as he contemplated whether to help her, he suddenly caught sight of her face—it was strikingly similar to someone he knew!
But he quickly dismissed the thought; it couldn't be her—she had long since left him and this world!
He felt a moment of confusion in his heart as he suddenly remembered that this was his sister's classmate—someone named Li, a quiet girl he had seen a few times. Whenever he saw her, he couldn't help but think of her, which is why Yan Chengjie always kept his distance when he spotted her.
When he saw Chen Li turn and walk into a narrow alley, the two men following her displayed sinister smiles on their faces. Without hesitation, he quickly got out of the car and jogged into the alley, where he soon heard Chen Li's cries for help.
In that critical moment, it was he who saved her.
