I instinctively hugged him. His body stiffened in my embrace, and then he gently patted my head, saying, "Don't be afraid." I could hear his strong heartbeat, which made me feel very reassured. However, this atmosphere didn't last long before he broke it.
"How long do you plan to keep hugging me?" His hoarse voice whispered in my ear. My face flushed, and feeling embarrassed, I wriggled out of his arms. The elevator resumed its normal operation, and the doors opened to reveal many people waiting outside. With my face still red, I lowered my head and quickly ran away.
After that, I intentionally avoided Fang Chu even more. Until he chased me down to my doorstep.
"Why have you been avoiding me?" he asked, puzzled.
"I don't want to be a Simpering Fool anymore," I replied honestly.
"Simpering Fool?" He frowned, "What do you mean?"
"Just check Baidu," I said as I closed the door and leaned against it, my heart racing.
I didn't know if Fang Chu checked Baidu or not, but he started letting me sneak glances at him. When I did, he would smile back at me. Unable to resist, I secretly took a photo of him and posted it on social media. He would like it and even comment on it.
"You're taking sneaky photos? Why did you turn them into cartoon characters?"
"How am I supposed to sneak a look at you like this?"
"What kind of nonsense are you posting? Repost it."
I felt embarrassed. With him being so proactive, I found myself at a loss. I went to find him and asked the question that had been bothering me: "What does this mean?"
"What do you mean?" He pretended to be confused.
"Well..."
I took a deep breath. "Why do you want to look at me, and even like and comment on my posts?"
"Is that not allowed?" he retorted.
"It is allowed, but..."
I bit my lip. "Why do you want to do that?"
"I want to be your Simpering Fool," he answered candidly.
I nearly choked.
"What are you talking about?"
I was confused. "Why would you want to be a Simpering Fool?"
"Then why do you want to be a Simpering Fool?" he countered.
"I..."
I was at a loss for words.
Why did I want to be a Simpering Fool?
At first, I thought he was handsome and charming, but later, as I got to know him better, I realized he wasn't as perfect as I had imagined.
He could be selfish and would use his charm to confuse me, making me drive him around or clean up after him...
But I also discovered his good side.
After he learned that I was misunderstood by others, he helped me take a photo with Shen Yuqian and posted it on social media with the caption: "My girlfriend and her best friend."
His friends left comments joking around.
"This is Fang Chu's girlfriend; she's really beautiful."
"Hello, future sister-in-law."
"Fang Chu, why didn't you tell us you had a girlfriend? Keeping it from us is not cool."
...
I looked at their comments, feeling sweet inside.
So this is how wonderful it feels to be acknowledged by others.
"Say something," he urged me.
"I..."
I bit my lip and gathered my courage to ask, "Do you like me?"
He froze for a moment before nodding his head. "Yeah."
"..."
I looked at him in surprise and delight.
He lowered his head, not looking at me. "But you said you have someone you like, and I don't want to disturb you."
"When did I say that?"
I was taken aback.
He looked up at me. "You said it yourself. Have you forgotten?"
"When did I say that?"
I couldn't remember.
"It was that day when you fell asleep during the picnic and talked in your sleep," he reminded me.
I felt embarrassed.
"What did I say in my sleep?"
I couldn't recall.
He took a deep breath and slowly spoke, "You said, 'Fang Chu, I like you. Please don't ignore me, okay?'"
My face turned red instantly.
I said it in my sleep; it doesn't count.
"Say it again," he insisted, looking at me intently.
"I won't."
I turned around, facing away from him. "You're lying; I don't want to say it again."
"I'm not lying."
He stepped in front of me. "I really heard it."
"What about you?"
I lifted my head to look at him. "Do you like me?"
He hesitated for a moment and gently nodded.
"Then why did you call me Plain Jane before?"
I asked him unhappily.
