"Never mind what others think. Even if you marry the Grand Tutor, you won't be troubled every day." I stood there, my heart filled with mixed emotions.
Although I knew I was not favored by them, I never expected to be sent off like this to a fiery bed. I nodded in agreement, and the tears that had been hovering at the corners of my eyes finally fell. I turned and leaned on Ran as she helped me back.
Lin Jiaorui seemed to casually say, "Sister, in just a few days you'll be married. Before you leave, let Ran serve our mother in your stead to show filial piety!"
I turned to look at her, seeing the calculating and triumphant glint in her delicate, pitiful eyes. My legs felt weak as I pushed Ran away and returned alone, softly replying, "Alright."
I knew she was afraid I would run away and keep Ran as a hostage. It didn't matter anymore. Life was hard either way; perhaps marrying over would allow me to live a little better since it was a bestowed marriage!
On my wedding day, the Joy Room was brightly lit. I sat on the edge of the bed, my heart pounding like a drum. Jian Ming's footsteps approached steadily from afar, strong and assured. He stood before me, silent for a moment before lifting the bridal veil.
He took the combined wine and we drank it back-to-back. At that moment, I finally got a clear look at his face. I kept staring...
"Why didn't anyone tell me you were so handsome?" I realized too late that I had accidentally spoken my thoughts aloud upon feeling his cold gaze on me.
I watched him go into the inner room to change clothes and turned to leave, saying, "I'm going to sleep in the study." My movements were swift, and I couldn't manage to say another word.
Before falling asleep, I thought to myself that such a handsome person deserved my good treatment.
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the window onto the bed. I discovered six maidservants standing beside me, their trays filled with gold and silver jewelry, jade ornaments, and fine fabrics. Qiu stepped forward and softly said, "Madam, the master said these are all gifts for you so you can play with them whenever you like."
I looked in astonishment at each of the trays.
Thinking, "A gift is not the same as a reward; there are all kinds. It turns out he is a considerate and gentle person."
"Do you still like the gifts I sent you?" His gentle voice suddenly came from behind me.
I happily turned around and hugged him, "I do."
"Aren't you afraid of me?" he asked, with a hint of curiosity in his tone.
I shook my head, trying to make my voice sound calm. "What use is fear? Since I have married you, I am your wife. No matter what the future holds, I will be by your side."
A flicker of surprise flashed in Jian Ming's eyes. It seemed he did not expect me to respond this way.
He took a step closer, gently lifting my chin with his hand, forcing me to meet his gaze. "Do you know what it means to marry me?"
"It means I will face everything with you, whether it is glory or hardship," I answered firmly, though there was a hint of uncertainty in my heart.
He fell silent, and the coldness in his eyes seemed to melt away slightly.
Turning away with a sense of detachment, I felt a mix of emotions swirling within me.
On our wedding night, my husband did not spend it with me. The indifference of the wedding night contrasted sharply with the tenderness of the next day and his subsequent departure.
I felt lost, unsure of how to treat him well. Yet at the same time, I felt a sense of relief because I knew Jian Ming was not a heartless person.
"I heard you love bamboo, so I had someone tear down the house in Eastern Garden and create a bamboo grove. In time, we can go there to play music and drink," Jian Ming said on a rest day while leisurely combing my long hair with a jade comb.
"My husband truly knows how to care for others, but isn't this a bit excessive? It seems like a great undertaking that burdens the people and wastes resources," I replied.
