I jokingly said, "Why are you leaving just as Shalolo arrives? If I didn't know better, I'd think you two were having an affair behind my back."
This made Lin Yulin's expression freeze instantly, and beads of sweat began to roll down his forehead.
He immediately stammered, "How, how could that be? Cousin, don't say such nonsense."
Shalolo was also a bit annoyed and replied, "With so many people around, what are you talking about? Affair?"
Oh right, I forgot. They are a legally married couple; it only counts as an affair when they are with me.
I self-deprecatingly chuckled and said, "I was just joking. Did you two take it seriously?"
Shalolo then sat down across from Zhou Xiaoan, but kept her head down and didn’t say anything.
"After so many years apart, why didn't you two even greet each other? Are you really trying to avoid suspicion?"
At my teasing, Lin Yulin pretended to say "hello" to Shalolo.
Shalolo smiled back at him and replied, "Hello."
Watching the awkward and comical scene between the two of them, I nearly burst out laughing.
"Shalolo, didn't you say you didn't want to cancel the wedding? How about we ask my cousin, who is a well-known curator, to plan our wedding?"
Shalolo's hands trembled continuously, and she didn't dare to look up at me even once.
"What's wrong? Why aren't you speaking? You were quite vocal when distorting the facts online and turning black into white in front of friends and family," I said.
Lin Yulin sensed the atmosphere was off and quickly changed the subject, "What kind of flowers do you want for the wedding? I can prepare them in advance."
"Let me think... how about lilies? Wishing my fiancée and her husband a lifetime of happiness. Cousin, what do you think?"
Shalolo immediately stood up, grabbed my hand, and tried to leave. "Let's talk about this when we get back; there's no need to argue here."
"What? Aren't you the one who loves to argue with me in public? We're just discussing things; it's not an argument." I continued, "Shalolo, Lin Yulin told me that his girlfriend waited for him for five years while he was abroad. Is that true?"
Shalolo pressed her lips tightly together, her fists clenched, remaining silent.
Meanwhile, Lin Yulin downed his cup of coffee in one go, then stood up and pulled Shalolo into his embrace.
"Zhou Xiaoan, if you have any emotions to express, direct them at me, not at her. I am married to Shalolo, so what? From the beginning, we have always loved each other; you are the one who doesn't belong here, understand?"
Upon hearing this, Shalolo suddenly shouted, "No! That's not how it is!"
She broke free from Lin Yulin's embrace and walked straight towards me, tears streaming down her cheeks.
She cried so hard that she could barely catch her breath, just like when Lin Yulin abandoned her five years ago.
I remained unmoved, no matter how much she cried and fussed, there was not a shred of sympathy left in me.
She desperately burrowed into my arms, repeatedly saying, "You are not an outsider; it’s not supposed to be like this."
I didn't respond; instead, Lin Yulin spoke up with a gloomy expression, "Shalolo, don't forget that we are the legal couple."
After saying that, he left.
Watching Lin Yulin's figure gradually fade away, she stumbled and slumped into a chair, her eyes hollow and vacant.
After a long while, she finally gathered herself and asked, "How did you find out?"
