Li Wan had stayed in the hospital room with Gaoyuan all night. She sat by the bed, anxiously watching him. The doctor said she had to stop taking her medication and that he would have to get through this on his own for now.
Li Wan bit her lip and held his hand tightly. Zhou Shu was also in the room with him.
"Yuan, wake up," Zhou Shu urged.
Gaoyuan remained unresponsive, eyes closed.
"Yuan, talk to me," Zhou Shu continued.
Still no response from Gaoyuan.
"Yuan, I don't know anything about your past," Zhou Shu said. "Can you tell me?"
Finally, Gaoyuan opened his eyes. He looked at her, his voice hoarse, "What do you want to know?"
Zhou Shu was momentarily taken aback before asking, "Why did you get this illness?"
Gaoyuan paused for a moment before replying, "My dad is an alcoholic, and my mom is a gambler."
Zhou Shu was stunned into silence.
"They often fought over money," Gaoyuan continued. "Eventually, they got divorced."
"My dad drinks every day, and when he's drunk, he hits me."
"My mom ignores me; she's always playing cards."
Gaoyuan: "I had a tough childhood."

Zhou Shu: "..."
Zhou Shu looked at him, unable to speak.
Gaoyuan: "..."
Gaoyuan sighed, "You don't have to pity me."
