The police officer asked, "Haven't you thought about calling the police?"
I forced a smile and replied, "I have."
"But it didn't help."
The officer frowned, "Why not?"
I sighed, "After my dad found out I called the police, he beat my mom even harder."
"There was one time I secretly called the police."
"When they arrived, my mom didn't dare to tell the truth."
"My dad beat my mom right in front of the officers."
"When the police asked him why he was hitting her, my dad said, 'I'm beating my wife; what business is it of yours?'"
"'This is my family matter; it's none of your concern.'"
"The police couldn't find any evidence and had no way to take my dad away."
"Later, they told me that as long as my mom was willing to get her injuries checked, they could escalate my dad's violence to a legal level."
"I asked my mom why she didn't get checked, and she said if my dad went to jail, no one would take care of her."
"It was hard for her to raise me alone; if she lost her income, we would both starve."
The officer frowned and said, "What about your grandmother?"
"Hasn't she thought about helping your mom?"
I forced a laugh and said, "Her?"
"She wishes my mom would die sooner."
"After the police came, she scolded my mom harshly, saying that my mom incited me to call the police and wanted to harm my dad."
"She claimed that it was only natural for my dad to hit my mom."
"What man doesn't hit women?"
"My dad hitting my mom was because she made a mistake."
"My mom deserved to be beaten."
"The police listened but could do nothing and left."
"Since then, my dad became even more arrogant."
"He intensified his abuse and hit my mom harder."
"However, he got smarter; he stopped hitting her in the face so we wouldn't see the injuries."
"Once, he stripped my mom right in front of me."
"He kicked my mom, and she fell to her knees in pain."
"As he kicked her, he shouted, 'You filthy whore, don't you like calling the police?'"
"'Go ahead and report it!'"
"'Let the police see if I really hit you!'"
"I rushed over, wanting to protect my mom."
"My dad kicked me away."
"He pointed at me and said viciously, 'You better behave yourself!'"
"'Otherwise, I'll hit you too!'"
"From that day on, my mom didn't let me interfere with her anymore."
"She told me to focus on my studies and get into a good university."
"She said that as long as I got out, she could escape this family."
The police asked, "What happened after you went to university?"
I sighed, "When I went to university, I moved into a dorm."
"I thought that by being away from home, I wouldn't have to see my dad hit my mom again."
"But I was wrong."
"Every night, I could feel that my mom was being beaten by my dad again."
"I urged her to get a divorce, but she refused."
"She knew that my dad wouldn't let me go."
"I could only study hard, hoping to get into university so I could take my mom away from this home."
The police looked at me, a hint of sympathy in their eyes.
"So that's why you're so indifferent to your father's death?"
I sneered, "Am I indifferent?"
"What difference does it make if I'm not indifferent?"
"Should I cry?"
"Would that mean my mom would face violence from my dad again?"
The police frowned and said, "So you think it's right for your mother to kill?"
"Is it right to kill just because of long-term domestic violence?" I retorted, "Don't you find that strange?"
"My mother killed someone; was it really because she suffered from long-term domestic violence?"
The police officer asked, "What do you mean?"
I scoffed, "You must have checked, right?"
"At the time of the incident, our water meter was running."
"This indicates that my mom was using water."
"Was she cooking or taking a shower?"
"If she was cooking, why wasn't the food ready when my dad and Grandma died in the house?"
"If she was taking a shower, why would my dad and Grandma die in the house while she was bathing?"
The police officer coldly replied, "Your mother's statement is that your dad wanted to hit her because the food was too salty."
"In a moment of impulse, she grabbed a knife and stabbed your dad."
"Your grandmother saw this and tried to escape; your mother chased her down and also stabbed Grandma."
I was stunned. "How could that be possible?"
The police officer asked, "What’s impossible about it?"
I shook my head. "My mom wouldn't act so impulsively."
"If she were really that impulsive, she would have divorced my dad long ago."
"And even if my mom acted in a moment of impulse and stabbed my dad, why would Grandma run away?"
"She should have called the police immediately."
The police officer remained silent for a moment and said, "We will investigate."
"We'll stop here for today."
"You cannot leave; we still need to ask you more questions."
