Two weeks ago, the doctor told me that my life would end this year.
A week ago, I took out the divorce agreement and told Gu Zhongming to let him go.
Today, I went to find his mistress and knocked on her door. She opened it looking delicate and startled. I smiled arrogantly and said, "Tell Gu Zhongming that if he doesn't come home, I'll handle this myself, or else I'll come over to provoke you."
The girl turned pale with fear and trembled as she called, "Zhongming, that fierce woman asked me to tell you... she said... she said..."
"What did she say?"
"She said she would come over to provoke me..."
She was crying so hard she could barely catch her breath.
I held back my laughter; this girl was quite dedicated.
Gu Zhongming rushed back in a fit of anger. I held a glass of red wine and swayed it around, "Have you gone to provoke the young lady again? president Gu, can your kidneys handle this?"
" Ye Nuannuan, why are you provoking her again?"
"I just want to make you uncomfortable."
"You disappoint me so much. You don't want a divorce, yet you won't let me find happiness. What do you really want?"
The wine glass shattered on the floor into pieces.
Suddenly, I laughed, my laughter growing louder until tears streamed down my face.
"Gu Zhongming, when I was lonely, it seemed like you were doing just fine."
I took out the divorce agreement and slammed it in front of him: "So, I'm letting you go."
He flipped through the divorce agreement and looked at me suspiciously: "Why the sudden concession?"
"I don't want to argue anymore. You have your lawyer draft a new agreement; you owe me a share of your assets—don't think you can fool me."
Gu Zhongming snorted coldly and disdainfully said, " Ye Nuannuan, can't keep up the act anymore?"
"I'll give you ten million; we’ll be completely clear. You leave City C and never show up in front of me again."
I smiled slightly: "Alright."
Gu Zhongming didn't expect me to be so agreeable; fearing I might change my mind, he had someone prepare the agreement overnight, and we signed the divorce papers.
He left in such a hurry as if afraid I'd have a change of heart.
I looked at the agreement and smiled bitterly. It was fine; this was enough. In this lifetime, it was worth it.
On the day I signed the divorce agreement, Gu Zhongming's assistant respectfully called out to me, "President Lin." I nodded slightly. I had heard that title countless times when I was still at the company. Back then, Gu Zhongming was very clingy, following me every day, and I would call him "General Gu" with the same reverence as my current assistant.
As time passed, my relationship with Gu Zhongming deteriorated, and I spent less and less time at the company. Fewer people called me "President Lin" anymore.
The assistant quietly reminded me, "President Lin, do you want to think it over again?"
I shook my head. "No need; let's just do it today."
On this last day, at least I could fulfill a wish.
The assistant hesitated to speak. "President Lin, you..."
I smiled. "Make sure General Gu doesn't arrive late at the civil affairs bureau in a month."
This marriage was finally coming to an end.
When I left my residence, Gu Zhongming had not yet returned. I took nothing with me and got into the car heading to Yangcheng.
The scenery outside the window flew by, and I suddenly remembered how Gu Zhongming pursued me back then with such determination. At that time, he wasn't the president; he was just a small employee in the company who would pick me up and drop me off at school rain or shine.
He said, "Nuan Nuan, one day I'll make you the president's wife."
I smiled brightly. "Then you better work hard."
Eventually, he really did become the president, but our relationship drifted further apart. He no longer called me "Nuan Nuan" but referred to me as Ye Nuannuan instead. He no longer came home to accompany me after work; instead, he would stay out all night. He even stopped liking me.
Since that was the case, it was time to leave. There was nothing left to miss in City Z.
