I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep, waking up to find myself in Yangcheng. Yangcheng is my hometown, where my parents rest in peace.
I grabbed my suitcase and headed to the cemetery, where my parents and grandfather are buried. I placed a bouquet of Chrysanthemums down and sat beside the tombstone, murmuring, "Dad, Mom, I'm back. Are you happy?"
"You must be very happy; I've finally gotten rid of Gu Zhongming."
"He betrayed me, but don't worry, I won't let him have it easy."
I rambled on for a while, and by the end, I felt it was pointless. I used to have so much to say, but now I could only talk to the tombstone.
"Mom and Dad, I'm planning to buy a plot near you. When I die someday, you have to save me a good spot, preferably one with good feng shui. I want to be reborn into a good family next time; please don't let me encounter a dog of a man like Gu Zhongming again."
I stayed at the cemetery for a long time until it got dark before leaving.
As I passed by Yangcheng High School, I stopped in my tracks. This was the school I once attended and where I met Gu Zhongming.
After hesitating for a moment, I walked inside. The security guard asked who I was looking for, and I winked at him: "My teacher is looking for me; I'm a parent."
The guard was fooled by my excellent acting skills and let me in.
The school was filled with laughter and the vibrant energy of youth; I couldn't help but smile.
Being young is wonderful.
I found the senior year building and followed my memory to Class 5's classroom, which was empty.
I walked over to my old seat and sat down; the desk still had three carved characters— Ye Nuannuan.
I stared blankly at the desk, not knowing how much time passed until the classroom filled with people.
I looked up but didn't see Gu Zhongming. Of course, this was all an illusion.
I closed my eyes, counted to ten, and when I opened them again, Gu Zhongming appeared before me.
He looked at me nervously: " Ye Nuannuan, what's wrong?"
I stared at him for a long time before slowly smiling: "It's nothing, Gu Zhongming; I've missed you so much."
" Ye Nuannuan, you scared me!"
"How did you end up here? Didn't the teacher say you transferred schools?"
"I wanted to see you."
"Well, you've seen me now, so you can go."
"..."
"Gu Zhongming, don't be angry. I was just joking."
" Ye Nuannuan, if you keep this up, I won't talk to you anymore."
"Don't be like that. Just talk to me for a bit."
"What should we talk about?"
"Which university do you want to apply to?"
"What about you?"
"I don't know. I want to apply to the same university as you, but I'm afraid I won't make it."
"Then which university do you want to apply to?"
"Yangcheng University."
"Then I'll go with you."
...
The scene suddenly shattered; the classroom was empty, and everything had changed.
I smiled self-deprecatingly. It's no use; I can't go back.
A month later, I returned to City Z, and Gu Zhongming's expression was dark.
I teased, " president Gu is in high spirits; getting a divorce and bringing a lover along."
"Hurry up and stop causing trouble."
"You weren't this eager when we got married back then."
" Ye Nuannuan!"
"Either knock me out now and take me in for the divorce, or get lost."
Gu Zhongming shot me a fierce glare before turning to leave.
I felt a knot in my chest. If I couldn't get a divorce, then I would cause a scene. Anyone who annoyed me would feel my wrath. I bought a baseball bat and took a taxi to Hua Ling's place. On the way, I called the property management, claiming I had forgotten the password and asked them to come unlock the door.
By the time I arrived, the property management and the locksmith were already waiting. I smiled and said, "Thank you! Please hurry, I'm in a rush." Gu Zhongming liked to have his mistresses stay at his home while sending the others to hotels.
As I walked into the living room, I saw a photo of Gu Zhongming and Hua Ling together, and my anger boiled over. I swung the bat and smashed it. The glass shattered, and cracks appeared on Hua Ling's face.
I raised the bat again and destroyed everything I could in the room. The last piece was a purple jade ornament that Gu Zhongming had given me; it was something my grandmother cherished while she was alive, even wanting to hold it in her arms after she passed.
With one swing, the ornament shattered into pieces. My relationship with Gu Zhongming had long been like that ornament—broken into several fragments. I used to think about mending it, but now all I wanted was to get as far away as possible.
When Gu Zhongming and Hua Ling rushed back, the room was already in disarray. Gu Zhongming's eyes were bloodshot with rage; he looked like he wanted to strangle me. " Ye Nuannuan!" he shouted.
Hua Ling stood there dumbfounded. "Oh my God, Sister Lin, you..."
I waved the bat in my hand and said, "Gu Zhongming, see you at the civil affairs bureau tomorrow. Otherwise, what I've broken won't just be these things."
The next day, Gu Zhongming went to the civil affairs bureau alone, and we quickly completed the divorce procedures. He didn't want to say a single word to me throughout the process.
I sighed with relief as I walked out of the civil affairs bureau and got into the same black car I had arrived in. Z City would no longer be my home. As for Gu Zhongming, we would never meet again.
