A few months later, I found myself idly wandering around all day, contemplating what words to inscribe on my tombstone after death. One day, while I was aimlessly strolling down the street, a young man stopped me.
With a big grin on his face, he said, "Miss, let me tell you about our newly opened cemetery package. If you order now, you'll get fresh flowers and fruits, plus a dedicated cleaning service..."
I was speechless. His smooth talking almost made me think I was already dead, and I couldn't help but laugh: "Hold on, I'm not dead yet."
"You misunderstood, Miss! We have many types of cemetery packages suitable for different people. Even if you don't plan to use it for burial, it can serve as a storage space. Order now and you'll still get fresh flowers and fruits—it's a deal you can't pass up!"
I waved my hand dismissively: "No thanks."
The young man persisted relentlessly, and I had no choice but to slip away. This little encounter surprisingly lifted my spirits; indeed, being alive is wonderful, and there's still a chance to be sold a cemetery plot. Those melodramatic words can wait until I'm actually dead.
I once saved an elderly man who had collapsed on the street, but his family mistakenly thought I was the cause of his distress. When the police arrived, I found myself at a loss for words.
"I really acted out of kindness," I insisted.
Fortunately, a witness had recorded the entire incident. After watching the video, the police officer looked at me with respect: "Miss Lin, you're truly brave; there aren't many young ladies like you nowadays."
I smiled shyly: "It's nothing special."
The pain became unbearable, and I had to be hospitalized. On the day I was admitted to the hospital, I didn't pay much attention to what the doctor was saying; after all, there would be plenty of time in the future.
One day, the intern Nurse Xiao Guo scolded me: " Ye Nuannuan, how could you secretly pull out the needle!"
I replied half-jokingly: "The medicine is too cold, Nurse Xiao Guo. Can you find me a hot water bottle?"
She looked at me skeptically: "Really?"
"More real than gold! If I wanted to pull out the needle secretly, I'd definitely find something to plug the hole."
Nurse Xiao Guo rolled her eyes and brought me a hand warmer. Before leaving, she reminded me: "Don't pull it out again! If it hurts, remember to call for me."
I looked into her eyes and felt a bit of a sting in my nose. It had been a long time since anyone had asked me if I was in pain.
"Thank you, Nurse Xiao Guo."
"Hmm?"
"It's nothing, just calling your name."
"You're crazy."
That night, I couldn't sleep due to the pain, so I wandered around the ward and found that only Nurse Xiao Guo was at the nurse's station, wiping away her tears.
I knocked on the door. " Nurse Xiao Guo, what's wrong?"
She quickly wiped her tears away. "It's nothing, you should go to sleep."
I forced a smile. "Stop crying; your eyes will get puffy and won't look good."
She glared at me. "What business is it of yours?"
I raised the bread in my hand. "How about I treat you to some bread? Just stop crying."
Nurse Xiao Guo: "..."
That night, she brought me a piece of bread and a pack of tissues, and we watched TV shows together all night long. As time went by, I grew closer to Nurse Xiao Guo. I often brought her various snacks in the middle of the night—sometimes barbecue, sometimes fried chicken.
While eating, she would complain, " Ye Nuannuan, can't you eat less junk food and more proper meals?"
"If I don't eat junk food, what's the fun in that?"
"Hmph, you have such twisted logic."
In the quiet hospital at midnight, aside from the emergency room, everywhere else was extremely still. Nurse Xiao Guo and I ate and drank at the nurse's station, occasionally bursting into laughter. Thanks to her, I didn't feel as much pain.
