Mei Shouren came to me in a huff, questioning why I was at odds with his family. He explained, "My mother feels sorry for Sister-in-law being young and widowed, so it's natural for her to favor her. Besides, I promised you that I would never leave you. Why are you being so relentless?" I put down the documents and rubbed my aching eyes. "That's quite interesting. Your family is bullying me, and I'm not allowed to fight back?"
"That's my mother; can't you be a little understanding?"
"Sure, I'll be understanding. Then you should go tell everyone that you and your Sister-in-law are a couple. If you're going to do it, do it openly instead of sneaking around, making it easy for people to look down on us."
His face turned pale with anger. I stood up and leaned closer to him. "Mei Shouren, are you foolish or do you think I'm foolish? Did I ever mention your affair with your Sister-in-law before?"
Mei Shouren was taken aback.
I scoffed lightly, "No, you didn't. While we were dating, you hinted at your older brother's death being to save you and your younger brother. You occasionally showed nostalgia for your brother, and to comfort you, I spoke to my grandfather about introducing business opportunities for you."
Mei Shouren pressed his lips together and said nothing.
"Later, we got married. Under the pretense of helping me manage my business, you borrowed a large dowry from me and had my grandfather write you a recommendation letter. With that letter, you made a name for yourself in the Capital Business District."
Mei Shouren was left speechless by my words; after a long pause, he finally managed to say, "You weren't like this before."
I smiled sarcastically. "You weren't this foolish either. You've been sold out and still help count the money."
"Gu Min!" He was so angry he nearly jumped up. "Don't speak so harshly! It's just that with so many family members, I couldn't support you properly. If you were sensible, you'd learn from Sister-in-law—be virtuous and generous; it would reflect well on me."
I looked at him and asked slowly, "When you married me, you never mentioned this kind of relationship with your Sister-in-law."
"If you had been honest, I wouldn't have married you."
"Only after establishing yourself did you start bringing up your relationship with your Sister-in-law intermittently. I'm curious—if you're so in love, why not just clarify things outside? Why sneak around in my home? If you're not embarrassed, then I certainly am."
"Now that you feel secure and empowered in business, do you think your relationship with your Sister-in-law is insignificant? Do you think the Gu Family is easy to bully?"
He glared at me darkly for a moment before saying, "Gu Min, you're too harsh."
"Harsh?" I laughed in anger. "Mei Shouren, have you lost your common sense?"
"You've established yourself in the business world now; is that why you're saying all this?"
"If your feelings are so strong, why not just announce that Brother-in-law is marrying Sister-in-law? Why make your Mei Family's young mistress suffer this humiliation?"
"If you'd said it directly, I—Gu Min—would never have shamelessly pursued this."
Mei Shouren frowned, his tone slightly impatient: "Those are old matters; why do you always cling to them?"
I let out a light laugh, my tone laced with sarcasm. "If you think that's an old story, then why are you still holding onto it?"
Mei Shouren's expression darkened slightly, but he patiently replied, "Minmin, you have always been a smart person. You should understand that Sister-in-law having a child is beneficial for both you and me, as well as for this family."
I raised an eyebrow. "What benefit does it bring me?"
Mei Shouren looked at me as if I were foolish. "If Sister-in-law has a child, we can say you gave birth to twins. You know that families like ours can't just have one child. This way, whether it's a boy or a girl, you will suffer one less childbirth ordeal. It's the best choice for you, for me, and for the the Mei Family."
A mocking smile crept onto my lips, though my tone carried a hint of compliance. "Fine, then I'll go along with your plan."
Seeing me relent, Mei Shouren's expression relaxed a bit. He exchanged a few more perfunctory words before leaving.
As I watched him walk away, the smile on my lips became increasingly sardonic.
That night, I went to eavesdrop outside my mother-in-law's door.
Mei Shouren, my mother-in-law, and Sister-in-law were sitting in the room together, the atmosphere harmonious.
My mother-in-law sighed. "Ah, if only Shouren hadn't married that calamity back then."
Sister-in-law pressed her lips together and said softly, "Mom, please don't say that about Minmin..."
Mei Shouren snorted coldly. "She's nothing but a calamity. If it weren't for her usefulness back then, I wouldn't have married her."
Sister-in-law sighed again. "In the end, it's still my fault. If it weren't for me..."
My mother-in-law patted her hand. "Mingming, don't blame yourself. I know it's that calamity who is too harsh; it's not your fault."
Mei Shouren nodded. "Mingming, don't blame yourself too much. Rest assured that even if she has a child, it won't surpass you."
Sister-in-law frowned slightly. "Mom, what if she finds out about our situation? Will she leave you?"
My mother-in-law snorted coldly. "Does she dare? If she dares to divorce, I'll make sure she leaves with nothing."
Sister-in-law furrowed her brow. "Mom, if she leaves with nothing, won't all her assets, connections, and shares in family businesses go with her?"
Upon hearing this, my mother-in-law's expression grew serious. "You're right; we need to come up with a plan to keep those things."
Mei Shouren's eyes flickered slightly. "Those assets under her name were all acquired after marriage; logically speaking, I should have half of them."
Sister-in-law's eyes brightened. "In that case, we just need to find a way to get rid of her and create an excuse to transfer her assets to you."
My mother-in-law frowned slightly. "It's not that easy."
Sister-in-law pressed her lips together. "Mom, don't worry; as long as she gives birth to the child, we can claim she died from postpartum complications after having twins. At that point, how much of her wealth do you want? It will be up to you."
Mother-in-law nodded, "Alright, let's do it this way."
Mei Shouren also nodded, "Yes, we will follow your lead."
Hearing this, I struggled to control my trembling hands and suppress the anger within me as I returned to my room.
I gritted my teeth: they are truly shameless; the marriage must be ended.
But after enjoying so much, they should pay a price.
