Li Xuanqing stepped out of the teahouse, ignoring the complex gaze of Di Renjie behind him, and walked straight towards the Drunken Moon Pavilion. The market was still bustling, but his heart felt icy cold. The image of Hong Xiu's smiling face and the moments they shared flashed through his mind like a revolving lantern.
"Is this... the reason you chose to leave?" Li Xuanqing murmured to himself, quickening his pace as if trying to shake off the increasingly heavy sadness in his heart.
The Drunken Moon Pavilion had been reduced to ruins by a great fire, and the air was filled with the acrid smell of charred wood. Li Xuanqing avoided the fire-fighting officials and skillfully made his way to Hong Xiu's room. The room was a complete mess; the once exquisite decorations had turned to ashes.
Li Xuanqing crouched down, rummaging through a pile of burnt beams, hoping to find some trace left by Hong Xiu. Suddenly, his fingers brushed against something cold and hard. He carefully extracted it from the ashes and gently blew away the dust, revealing a translucent jade pendant.
The pendant was heart-shaped, intricately carved with a vivid red lotus, its petals still retaining a faint fragrance—the very scent that Hong Xiu often wore.
Li Xuanqing clutched the pendant tightly in his hand; a warm current surged in his heart but was quickly drowned by an even greater sorrow. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and tried to calm the tumultuous emotions within him.
When he opened his eyes again, his gaze had regained its clarity. He looked around and finally noticed a hidden compartment in the corner of the room. It was very discreet; had it not been for Li Xuanqing's familiarity with Hong Xiu's room, he might have easily overlooked it.
He approached it and gently pressed on it; the compartment opened with a soft click. Inside lay a wooden box adorned with intricate carvings, clearly not an ordinary item.
Li Xuanqing carefully opened the box and found a letter and a silk pouch inside. He first picked up the envelope and opened it to reveal elegant handwriting:
"Brother Xuanqing, by the time you read this letter, I will have already left. I know you will blame me for leaving without saying goodbye. But please forgive me; I have my own reasons...
...I am not an ordinary person but a Fox Demon who has cultivated for a thousand years. I came close to you for a reason..."
The letter abruptly ended here, with tear stains on the last few pages as if silently expressing the writer's sorrow and helplessness.
Li Xuanqing's hand trembled slightly as he held the letter, feeling a mix of emotions. He knew Hong Xiu's identity was complex but never imagined that her true identity was... a Fox Demon.
He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down as he continued reading:
"...I know my actions are selfish, but I truly do not want to lose you. However, fate is cruel; I cannot escape my destiny. The Nine-Tailed Fox is about to break free from its seal, and The Common People will fall into chaos. As a descendant of the Fox Clan, I cannot stand by idly; I must sacrifice myself to prevent this catastrophe...
...Inside the silk pouch is a treasure that can guide you to where the Nine-Tailed Fox is sealed. I know you can stop its scheme and protect The Common People.
...I’m sorry, Brother Xuanqing; please forgive my deception. If there is an afterlife, I hope to be with you..."
The letter remained unfinished at the end. Li Xuanqing closed it and shut his eyes again, memories of Hong Xiu’s every smile flooding back into his mind, filling him with bitterness.
He carefully placed the letter into his bosom before opening the silk pouch. Inside lay an ancient copper mirror that gleamed smoothly as if new, exuding a powerful spiritual energy.
Li Xuanqing immediately recognized this mirror as the legendary ancient artifact— Demon-Revealing Mirror!
He held the copper mirror tightly in his hand; a powerful force surged from it throughout his body. He felt as if there was some mysterious connection between him and this mirror.
Li Xuanqing stood up, gazing firmly into the distance; he knew he was about to embark on a perilous journey.
But he would not turn back.
For the sake of The Common People, for the sacrifice of Hong Xiu, he will do everything in his power! Li Xuanqing carefully tucked away the jade pendant and bronze mirror before turning and walking out of the ruins.
