Xiao Xiao and I nodded in response.
Then, the three of us and the dog got up again and headed towards Xuanchi.
The Xuanchi at night was even more beautiful.
The bright moonlight spilled onto the surface of the pond, resembling countless shining pearls.
The water rippled gently, sparkling like diamonds, making it feel as if we had entered a fairyland.
We walked slowly along the edge of the pond, as if afraid to wake the sleeping fairies.
Da Huang walked ahead at a leisurely pace, occasionally turning back to check on us.
The area around Xuanchi was silent.
Aside from the sound of the rippling water, there was no other noise.
After walking for about half an hour, we saw a large dark shadow in the distance.
A Meng whispered, "That should be the stone cliff where we camped during the day."
Xiao Xiao and I nodded in agreement.
After another half hour or so, we finally returned to the vicinity of the stone cliff.
The three of us and the dog climbed up to the cliff and found a clean, flat spot to sit down.
The night was deep, and the wind at the mountain top was colder.
We huddled around the campfire, leaning against each other to feel the warmth.
Da Huang lay at our feet, squinting his eyes and dozing off.
The night was extremely quiet.
Everything around us had fallen into a deep sleep.
Suddenly, a howl broke the silence.
We were startled and sat up straight.
This sound clearly came from Xuanchi.
We exchanged glances and immediately got up to rush towards Xuanchi.
In the distance, we could see the surface of the pond churning violently, as if it were boiling. Under the moonlight, a massive whirlpool was rapidly spinning in the water. We quickly stopped in our tracks, hiding behind a rock, and quietly peered at the pond.
The water was boiling, and waves were splashing like a torrential downpour. The whirlpool spun faster and grew larger. Suddenly, a gigantic shadow shot up from the whirlpool into the sky, accompanied by a series of howls. As we focused our eyes, we realized that this shadow was none other than the legendary Qiu Long.
In the moonlight, Qiu Long's body appeared wavy, bending and stretching at times. Its enormous scales shimmered under the moonlight. After circling above the pond a few times, Qiu Long dove back into the whirlpool. Shortly after, it burst out of the water again, spiraling for a few more circles before plunging back in.
After repeating this several times, the whirlpool gradually calmed down, and the pond returned to tranquility. After a while, the howling sounds also faded away, and everything fell silent once more. We let out a long sigh of relief and stepped out from behind the rock.
Back on the cliff, we sat down again. The earlier scene left everyone feeling uneasy. It seemed that Qiu Long truly lived up to its reputation—immensely powerful and unpredictable. To subdue Qiu Long would indeed be no easy task.
However, since we had come this far, we couldn't return empty-handed. Thinking of this, I recalled the instructions from Wujin Old Man and Old Mama, along with their earnest gazes. We discussed it among ourselves but still couldn't come up with any good solutions. The night was deepening, and the weather was getting colder.
We were unable to hold on any longer and had to return to the camp, crawling into the tent. Perhaps we were simply too exhausted; despite my heavy thoughts, I quickly fell into a deep sleep. The next morning, we got up early. The events of last night at Xiu Long left a deep impression on us. When we looked at Xuanchi again in the morning, it seemed even more mysterious and unfathomable. We had a light breakfast and then made our way back to the edge of Xuanchi.
