"Why can't I be here?" He Jia retorted, "I'm your student; isn't it natural for me to care about my teacher?"
"You..."
Cheng Bai wanted to argue back but found himself at a loss for words.
"Stop pretending, Cheng Bai," He Jia interrupted him, crouching down to meet his gaze. "Do you think I don't know about your relationship with her? I've known all along, right from the start."
Cheng Bai's pupils dilated in disbelief as he looked at He Jia. "You... what did you say?"
He Jia chuckled softly, gently stroking Cheng Bai's cheek with a tender yet cruel tone. "I said I've known you and she are married, and I also know you have a lovely daughter."
"Why are you doing this?" Cheng Bai grasped He Jia's hand, his eyes filled with pain and confusion.
He Jia's expression instantly turned cold. She forcefully pulled her hand away from Cheng Bai and stood up, looking down at him.
"Because I love you," He Jia's voice was sharp and piercing. "I love you, so I won't allow you to be with her. I want you to belong to me forever!"
Cheng Bai felt as if an invisible hand was tightly gripping his heart, making it nearly impossible for him to breathe.
He opened his mouth to say something but found his throat dry, unable to produce any sound.
"Are you satisfied now?" Cheng Bai slumped helplessly to the ground, his voice hoarse. "You won, I lost; you've destroyed everything I had..."
He Jia looked at the man before her, once full of vigor but now in a pitiful state, and felt no pity—only the thrill of revenge.
"This is just the beginning," she said coldly. "I want you to watch as you lose everything, to see your loved ones leave you one by one, until you are left all alone, living in this world in misery!"
With that, He Jia turned and walked away without a trace of regret.
Cheng Bai sat on the ground, allowing despair to consume him.
He frantically dialed Jiang Jia's number, but all he heard on the other end was the cold, mechanical voice of a woman: "Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy..."
A sense of foreboding washed over him. Cheng Bai staggered to his feet and hailed a taxi, rushing towards the hospital.
In the hospital corridor, Cheng Bai anxiously asked the nurse about Keke's condition.
"Are you a family member of the patient?" the nurse asked.
"I am..."
"The patient's condition is critical. The doctors are doing everything they can to save her. Please be patient."
The nurse's words struck him like a bolt from the blue, and he felt darkness closing in as he nearly fainted.
He stumbled to the door of the operating room, staring at the closed door, filled with fear and despair...
Cheng Bai leaned weakly against the wall, his hollow eyes staring at the flickering red light above the operating room. The door to the operating room was made of cold metal, like an insurmountable chasm separating him from Keke.
In his mind, he recalled Keke's innocent smile, and he could hear her sweet voice calling out "Daddy." He remembered promising Keke that he would take her to the amusement park and buy her the princess dress she loved so much...
Yet all those beautiful promises had turned into distant wishes because of his momentary lapse in judgment.
If something were to happen to Keke, he would never forgive himself for the rest of his life!
As time passed by second by second, Cheng Bai felt as if his heart was being tightly squeezed by someone, nearly suffocating him.
